WILLOWVALE PICASSO [Eastwinds Axiom / Taralea Trafeiya]. Chestnut stallion, 1999. Owner and breeder: Noel & Gaynor Evans. Strain: Kehailan Rodan (Rodania 1869).
The New Zealand Arab Horse Breeders Society had awarded the 2005 WAHO Trophy to the stallion Willowvale Picasso, bred and owned by Noel and Gaynor Evans.
Willowvale Picasso is the only New Zealand bred horse to cross the Tasman Sea into Australia and win a National Title there, namely that of Australian National Champion Colt in 2002. He then returned to New Zealand and in 2004 won the title of New Zealand’s National Champion stallion. He left good foals sired when he was in Australia, many of which have won in the show ring at national level, and his foals in New Zealand are also of a high quality.
His pedigree is a classic mixture of ‘down under’ Colonial, Crabbet and Egyptian lines. We hope that his photo will be published on the WAHO website in due course.
WAHO was very sorry to learn that Mrs. Gaynor Evans has passed away since the award was made. We send our sincere condolences to her husband Noel, to her family and friends.

ZANTOS [Zaana / Blue Chap]. Chestnut gelding, 1987. Breeder: Guri Hårstad. Owner: Bjoerg A. Hals. Strain: Kehailan Rodan (Rodania 1869).
The Norwegian Arab Horse Society (NAHF) are pleased to announce that their winner of the 2005 WAHO Trophy is the 18 year-old chestnut gelding, Zantos. A small horse at only 145cm, but a great horse nonetheless, Zantos and his owner Bjoerg A. Hals have been the most winning combination in western riding disciplines in Norway for the last three years. Zantos has now retired from top level competing, and is going to be the schoolmaster for Bjoerg’s daughter, although maybe he will take part in some competitions with her in the future.

|
Western riding is not yet a very big discipline in Norway, but Zantos has become an icon in western riding and he has shown us all that an Arabian horse can reach the top in riding competitions. He is a great ambassador for the Arabian breed in Norway and is a very worthy winner of the first WAHO Trophy.

AL HARITH Chestnut stallion, 2003. Breeder and owner: Mr. Hamood Saif Al Raqadi. [Daffy Duck / A’sareeah]. Strain: Not Recorded. Family of Em’tayra (1938).
The Royal Cavalry, Arabian Horse Stud Book of Oman, have informed WAHO that their 2005 WAHO Trophy has been awarded to Al Harith. This excellent home-bred colt is a race winner already. This is not unexpected, as his pedigree contains a wealth of racing talent. His dam A’sareeah was bred by the Royal Stables of Oman, by Tout An Khan (imported from France) out of Tronja (imported from Tunisia). His sire Daffy Duck (Cheri Bibi / Super Nana) was bred in France and imported to the United Arab Emirates. A photograph of the winning horse will be published on the WAHO website in due course.

Etruria, the reigning “Queen of Janow”, is the oldest Arabian mare in Poland of such very high merit. She is the worthy recipient of Poland’s first WAHO Trophy for the following reasons: Her show record includes the titles of European Junior Champion Mare 1978; World Senior Champion Mare 1981; Polish National Champion Mare 1988 and European Reserve Champion Mare 1988. |
As a broodmare of distinction, she is the dam of 10 outstanding foals, including six daughters who all received broodmare status and are now founding their own dynasties in Poland or abroad, they include Enaria (sold at the 1985 Polish Ovation Sale for $520,000); Etruska, Etana, Ettoria, Esparceta and Epifraza. Even more significantly, Etruria is the dam of three chief sires:
| Etogram (1981, by El Paso), three times Polish National Senior Reserve Champion Stallion (1991-1993), Polish Senior Champion Stallion & Best in Show (1994), International Senior Champion Stallion, Babolna, 1994; Swedish and Norwegian Champion Stallion in 1996; Scandinavian Senior Champion Stallion, Blommerod, 1997. | Beautiful, feminine and a dynamic mover, Etruria was the most beloved mare of the late Mr. Andrzej Krzysztalowicz, long-time director of Janow Podlaski State Stud and a founding member of the first WAHO Executive Committee. Etruria had the great honour to accompany her old friend on his last journey, leading the funeral procession to his graveside. Etruria’s place in the history books of Polish Arabians is assured and she received her WAHO Trophy with her usual grace at a special ceremony during the 2005 Polish Arabian Horse Days Festival. On 23 January 2006, she will celebrate her 31st birthday. |

QUIKO AL OASIS [Malik El Massan - Gamita]. Chestnut stallion, 1997. Breeder: Pedro Barreto, Coudelaria Oásis. Owner: Joaõ Moura. Strain: Managhi (Saada, 1898).
At the recent General Meeting of the Associação Portuguesa do Cavalo Arabe it was decided that the winner of our 2005 WAHO Trophy would be the stallion Quiko Al Oásis. He was chosen for this award because of his wonderful temperament and undeniable popularity in Portuguese Bullfight; as such he is the pride of our Portuguese Arabian Horses. Note that Portuguese mounted bullfighting is a sport performance where the bull is not killed; it was originally the pastime of the gentry and the royal family, developed from the war exercises of the middle ages. It demonstrates the training and schooling of the horse and is conducted under a strict 'code of honour'. It is an extraordinary show of a horse’s courage, elegance and dexterity and also shows a high level of trust in the partnership between rider and horse. The horses taking part in this sport, also known in Portugal as Toureio Equestre, must be very well schooled to the highest level of dressage, supple and quick to respond, as well as brave.
Quiko Al Oásis, by Malik El Massan and Gamita, belongs to João Moura, our most famous Portuguese bullfighter, and his breeder is Pedro Barreto of Coudelaria Oásis.

MADIAR [Drug / Martinika]. Grey stallion, 1994. Breeder and owner: Tersk Stud. Strain: Kehailan Moradi (Sahara).
The Russian Arabian Horse Stud Book and the Russian Ministry of Agriculture - Rosplemkonzavod, have awarded the 2005 WAHO Trophy for Russia to the stallion Madiar, Race and Show Champion. Madiar combines a classic Russian pedigree with athletic prowess and beauty and is a well-deserving winner of the first WAHO Trophy for Russia.
This outstanding horse was born in Tersk stud – the cradle of Russian Arabian horses. He is a tall (1m 60 cm), powerful stallion with fantastic movement, whose charisma makes this special unforgettable impression on everybody who sees him.
He has a superlative race record, racing for six seasons from the age of 2 to 7. From his first race he proved himself as a serious racehorse, starting his career with a win in the Grand Prix for 2-year- olds, the most prestigious race for young horses in Russia. After that he never left a chance for others in the major races for 3-year-olds and older horses. Madiar is the “Triple Crown” holder not only according to the traditional Russian system, winning major events in each age group - Grand Prix for 2-year olds, Russian Derby and “Topol” Stakes; but also according to European classification, coming first in Group 1 races for 3-year-olds: Derby, “Grand Summer” Stakes and “Budenny” Stakes. He also won other top class races including the Aswan Prize, and the Grand Sprinter prize. Madiar also proved his top class on the European tracks: in 1998 he won the Darc Stakes in The Netherlands and the Prix Pompadour in Switzerland. In 2000 he came second in the Nagrada Europa in Warsaw. Altogether, his career race record is 31 = 15-9-2. This is how his life long trainer Alexander Hubulov describes him: “However competitive and strong Madiar’s opponents were, I was always confident that he would give the race 100%, and even one thing more, which is only possessed by special race horses – his heart”.
After his successful racing career, Madiar returned to his home stud to start his new career as a breeding stallion. In 2004, he proved again his Champion status, but this time in the show ring, his exceptional movement and excellent Arabian type winning him the title of Senior Champion stallion during Saint Petersburg ECAHO C-show.
His success on the racetracks and in the show ring is largely owed to Madiar’s exceptional pedigree. His sire Drug (by Prizrak and out of Karinka - one of the best mares in Tersk history and still a race record holder) was 1991 European Show Champion and twice named European Racehorse of the Year (1990 and 1991). Altogether, Drug has left big impact on the Arabian breed worldwide. Madiar’s dam, Martinika, is the daughter of renowned Aswan and out of the famous broodmare Monogramma. The full sister of Madiar, Madiera, is currently one of the best broodmares in Tersk, and her first filly, Mari, in 2004 smashed two National race records over 1000 m and 1200 m.
Due his to long racing career, Madiar started producing in the stud relatively late, but already there are a number of true racetrack “fighters” among his offspring. These include Vahmister, winner of a number of prestigious races in Kazakhstan; Vamplana, who was second in the Oaks in 2005; Medium, who had a good racing career on the Moscow racetrack; and Pyatigorsk racetrack favorites Kaiman and Monomah.

UNIKAT [Hamadan / El Hamza]. Grey stallion, 1989. Breeder and Owner: National Stud Farm Topolcianky. Strain: Obeyan (Karima).
The historic and beautiful National Stud of Topolcianky, founded in 1921, was the proud recipient of the 2005 WAHO Trophy for their 16 year old chief sire, Unikat. The award was made on 10th November, following the decision of a special commission of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Slovak Republic. The number of purebred Arabians in Slovakia is relatively small, and at present they do not take part in racing.
Unikat was selected for the WAHO Trophy due to his excellent pedigree, conformation and superb and correct movement both under saddle and in hand. Tracing exclusively to horses imported to Slovakia from Egypt in the early 1970s, this fine and much-admired stallion has inherited the exceptional qualities of his ancestors and is making an important contribution to the National Stud.

PIRUETA - P [Piligrim / Piruna] Chestnut filly, 2004. Breeder and Owner: Gregor Pintar. Strain: Kehaileh Jellabieh (Jellabiet Feysul).
Slovenia is one of the newest Members of WAHO, with a relatively small number of Arabian horses at present, although the numbers are growing each year. In 2005 the Slovenian Arabian Breeders Association organised their first National Show for Arab horses. This pioneering show took place in Ljubljana on 6th of September 2005. A total of 32 horses of all categories - 11 males and 22 females were presented to the judges in front of a good crowd of spectators.
The Breeders Association had decided in advance that the 2005 WAHO Trophy for Slovenia would be awarded to the best horse of this show, regardless of the category. The 2005 WAHO Trophy winner is therefore the ‘Best in Show’, being the lovely chestnut filly Pirueta-P, owned and bred by Gregor Pintar, one of the most enthusiastic members of the young Slovenian Arab Breeders Association.
This harmonious and good moving filly is of truly international bloodlines. Her dam is the German bred mare Piruna who was imported to Slovenia in 2002, by the Polish stallion Piruet (Probat / Pieczec) out of the Canadian mare, Into My Dream (Executive Class / Precious Me). Pirueta-P’s sire Piligrim, who was born in The Netherlands, is of Russian bloodlines (Balaton / Popova).
