REPORT MADE AT 2009 WAHO CONFERENCE:
I am Abdul Aziz Al Boenain, representing the Qatar Arabian Horse Registry, and with me is our Registrar, Dr. Mohammed Jebali.
I will now present the Qatar Report. Our current published stud book is Volume 5, the next volume will be ready by 2010, God willing. We registered 274 foals in 2007, there are about 35 breeding stallions, 365 broodmares and approximately 2,000 living purebred Arabian horses. We exported 173 horses, and imported 104 horses from all over the world in 2007. All foals are parent verified using DNA, with extremely few cases still parent verified by blood-typing. At the time of registration the foals are microchipped, as are imported horses which are not already microchipped. We allow Artificial Insemination using both local and imported semen, and also allow post mortem use of semen. We allow Embryo Transfer and so far have had about 4 registered foals produced through this method in Qatar. There is no limit on the number of foals per mare per year.
Arabian horses are used in Qatar for a variety of recreational activities, including showing, endurance and flat racing. The Arabian Shows have been increased to 3, from the year 2007. We have about 295 races in 43 meetings and about 13 endurance competitions each season. Thank you for your kind attention.
REPORT MADE AT 2007 WAHO CONFERENCE: The current Stud Book Volume 5 is ready and is being made, we are also putting the stud book in electronic format on a CD. We registered 183 foals in 2005 and 145 in 2006. There are about 35 breeding stallions, 189 broodmares, and approximately 1,800 living Arabian horses in Qatar. We exported 88 horses and imported 96 horses in 2006 from all over the world. All foals are parentage verified using the DNA technique before registration. If DNA cannot be used, they are parentage verified using blood-typing methods. On registration, foals are micro-chipped using the ISO compliant system and they are issued with a passport. We allow Artificial Insemination, using both local and imported semen. We also allow Embryo transfer and there is no limit on the number of foals per mare per year.
Arabian horses in Qatar are used for showing, endurance, flat racing and pleasure riding. We hold 2 Arabian horse shows and about 13 endurance rides every year. The number of flat races has been increased and we now have 246 races in 31 race meetings each season. The increase in flat races, endurance rides, and also the increase in prize money, has made a very positive impact on ownership and on the breeding of Arabian horses, with more first-time owners competing in the races. We are also trying to get the approval of ECAHO to allow prize money at our shows, because we want more Qatari citizens involved in Arabian horse activities. The Racing and Equestrian Club is being completely renovated, with many new buildings, more stables, and a modern and expanded equine hospital. Horses are treated at this hospital at a very subsidized cost.
