| REPORT MADE AT 2009 WAHO CONFERENCE:
My name is Dr. Khalid Hassan, I am the Director General of the Royal Arabian Stud of Bahrain, my co-delegate is Mr. Jehangir Rustomjee. I would like to express my pleasure once again at once again joining my fellow members of the WAHO family, and I bring you the greetings and best wishes for the success of this Conference from His Majesty the King of Bahrain, who is an Arabian horse lover.
The latest Bahrain stud book Volume 5, covering the period 2002-2005 was published in 2006 and has been circulated to all of our fellow Registrars. Volume 6 covering the period of 2006-2009 will be published next year on schedule. As I mention at every WAHO Conference, the population of Arabian horses in the Kingdom of Bahrain continues to grow due to both large foal crops and imports. The main reason for this increase in numbers is the great enthusiasm shown by all of the stables in both endurance competitions and in showing. All our breeding stock is DNA typed, as well as foals from the season 2003 onwards. All Bahrain-born foals are microchipped at first registration, and parent verified. We registered 142 new foals in the year 2008. There were 52 imports and 16 exports in the same year.
Horsemanship is one of the great traditions in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the growth and development of these equestrian activities are supported by the Royal Stud and the Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation as well as the Equestrian and Racing Club which hosts 26 race meetings each season. Each meeting has at least one race for purebred Arabian horses. Approximately 10 endurance rides are organized each year and we have had a very successful team internationally. Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Faisal Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, we have had a very well supported National Arabian Horse Show for the last 3 years, the 4th Show will be held in April this year. Alongside this, the Royal Stud’s Bahraini Arabians are shown at Festivals and Exhibitions to demonstrate the unique abilities and beauty of this classic breed.
REPORT MADE AT 2007 WAHO CONFERENCE: The Bahrain Stud Book Volume 5 covering the period 2002-2005 was published last year. The Arabian horse population in the Kingdom of Bahrain has seen a quantum increase in recent times, due to large foal crops and to imports. The total number of living Arabians in Bahrain is estimated at 1,500. There were 90 foals registered in 2006, in 2007 so far just to the end of April we have already registered 43.
We have DNA typed all our breeding stock, all foals from the season 2003 are already DNA typed and parent verified, and also all Bahrain-born foals are now micro-chipped.
Equestrian activities are a great tradition in the Kingdom of Bahrain and are actively supported by the Royal Stud and by the Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federations. The Equestrian Horse Racing Club holds 26 race meetings each season, each meeting holds at least one race for purebred Arabians. The Bahrain Endurance Federation organizes 12 endurance events each season, and also we held the very successful Sheikh Faisal bin Hamad Al Khalifa National Arabian Horse Show in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Alongside this, Bahrain Arabians are shown at festivals and exhibitions demonstrating the beauty and nobility of the breed.
In 2007 Bahrain registered 112 foals, and processed 20 exports and 96 imports.
