EQUIBORN K.A. 2023 WAHO Trophy Winner – Belgium

Equiborn K.A. Grey stallion, 2012. (QR Marc / Espadrilla) Breeder: Mr. Paul Gheysens, Belgium. Owner: Budhens Stud. Strain: Not Recorded (Milordka, 1816)

EQUIBORN KA Bronze Senior stallion

Citation by Susanne Bösche

Equiborn KA provided a brilliant end to 2023, with the judging team unanimously choosing the grey stallion at the European Championships in Italy. To the sound of the Belgian anthem, the Budhan-De Haes family of Budhen’s Stud received the prize of honour for the Gold Champion Senior Stallion.

This victory was the highlight of an outstanding career that began in 2012 when Equiborn KA was born at Knocke Arabians Stud, owned by Paul and Ria Gheysens. His sire is the World Champion QR Marc (Marwan Al Shaqab x Swete Dreams), and his dam, Espadrilla, is not only one of the most remarkable mares from Michalow’s breeding programme, but she also brings with her the influence and qualities of Monogramm and Emigracja, all found in Equiborn KA.

Of course, a breeder wants to present such a good, young stallion to the world. That’s why Equiborn’s show career began as a yearling, and his debut was a success, starting with Silver Champion and Best Belgium Horse at the West Coast Cup, followed by the All Nations Cup, a show with strong competition, especially in the yearling classes. Here, Equiborn KA took second in his class.

At yearling age, a few weeks of development make a difference; enough so for the grey horse to finish 2013 as Silver World Champion Yearling Colt in wintry Paris. And Equiborn KA continued to impress as a two-year-old; on the beach in Menton, judges awarded him Bronze Champion, and he would win Silver again in the 2015 World Championships in the junior class.

Again proving his breeder correct, Equiborn KA celebrated his first major success as a senior on French soil. At just four years old, the grey stallion impressed at the Breeders’ Cup in Chantilly, taking the title of unanimous Gold Champion and Best Male of the Show. By 2017, he was Bronze World Champion in Paris, bested only by Wadee Al Shaqab and Equator.

The logical next step being world domination, Equiborn KA left Europe to conquer the Arabian scene in the USA under the guidance of international top trainer David Boggs of the Midwest Training Centre, opening up new prospects for the QR Marc son.

Boggs has trained and shown many great horses in his decades-long career. There were plenty of qualities that he really liked about the grey horse from Belgium. “He has so many wonderful traits: big, beautiful eyes, great ears, correct conformation, a well laid-back shoulder, a naturally high tail set and great movement,” Boggs said once and added, “He should get 20’s for movement!”

Equiborn KA crowned his 2019 stay in the USA with two remarkable titles, waving the flag for excellent Arabian horse breeding in Belgium. He won the championship in his class at the Arabian Breeders World Cup and was also honoured as Bronze Supreme Champion Senior Stallion, while in Scottsdale at one of the most remarkable and competitive shows in the U.S. Arabian world, Equiborn KA won Arabian Breeder Finals Gold Champion.

After returning to European soil, the Budhan-De Haes family decided to send Equiborn KA back into the ring in 2023. Eleven years young, gleaming white, elegant, and full of tips, Equiborn KA was about to appear before the international judges again.

At the All Nations Cup in September, a highlight of the show year, Equiborn KA was awarded 2023 Bronze Champion Stallion. From there, he and his entourage travelled to Italy to compete for precious metal in the European Championships; successfully, as mentioned at the beginning.

Of course, it is not only his personal qualities and show titles that determine the value of a stallion. What advertises a stallion best above all, is good progeny. The Budhan-De Haes family not only enjoys the beauty of Equiborn KA, but they also appreciate his son Apollo KA (x Aria Athena). Born in 2018, this gelding has already won several important championships, including a highlight of his show career so far, 2023 All Nations Cup Silver Champion Gelding.

Other remarkable Equiborn foals of note, are the Knocke Arabians bred and owned son Poseidon KA (x Primera Marc), who as a yearling was named European Bronze Champion, and Melodina KA (x FS Magnums Madonna), a beautiful daughter who earned Gold Champion Junior Filly at the Nordic Open in Denmark in 2018.

Equiborn KA is without a doubt, an ambassador for Belgium Arabian horse breeding, thanks to his breed type, attitude, character, and his many show successes and good offspring. “We love our big boy, Equiborn,” says the Budhan-De Haes family. “He is always so sweet and is always very proud when he enters the arena. He has a beautiful head and has good legs, and for sure, type. We are very proud and honoured that Equiborn received the WAHO Trophy this year after his European Gold medal in Italy and his Bronze medal in Aachen in 2023. We are excited for the future with him.”

An overview of Equiborn’s KA Championship titles:
2023 Gold European Champion Stallion
2023 Bronze All Nations Cup Champion Stallion
2019 Arabian Breeder Finals Gold Champion Stallion, Scottsdale, USA
2019 Arabian Breeders World Cup Class Champion and Bronze Supreme Champion Senior Stallion

TREASURED MOMENTS 2023 WAHO Trophy Winner – USA

The Purebred Arabian Trust (PAT) is proud to announce that it has awarded the 2023 WAHO Trophy to the purebred Arabian mare and endurance racing icon, Treasured Moments. The fourteen-year-old mare by legendary race sire, DA Adios+ and out of Hidden Treasure, was bred by the Alan Kirshner and Deborah Mihaloff’s notable Cre Run Farm in Doswell, Virginia, and is proudly owned by Heather and Jeremy Reynolds of Dunnellon, Florida.

“Treasure,” as she is referred to in the barn, began her career in 2014 on the racetrack wearing the recognizable colours of Cre Run, one of the world’s most prominent breeding programs for Arabian racehorses. Treasure ran seven times as a four-year-old, with one first and three seconds and earnings of $11,315.

In November 2014, she caught the professional eye of Heather and Jeremy Reynolds, avid endurance riders at the top levels of the sport, and Treasure exchanged her racetrack life for the world of endurance.

Since then, the celebrated pair have recorded over 3,000 competition miles and countless wins together, including two Tevis Cups, one Haggin Cup, and the 2021 Italian Championships, which marked the first time an American horse has won overseas since the 90s. Treasured Moments is also a recipient of the Robie Cup, a medallion that is issued to horses upon the completion of five Tevis Cups. The medallion’s equine figurehead is Wendell Robie’s mare, a paternal great granddam to Treasured Moments.

Additionally, Jeremy and Treasure incorporated a new dynamic in 2023 – competing bridleless. In fact, the two won the 2023 Tevis Cup in an incredible 15 hours and 14 minutes, and they did it minus a bridle. It was a poignant image that spoke to their profound partnership.

Jeremy and Treasured moments

Only five WAHO Trophies have been awarded in the United States prior to Treasure Moments. One of those five recipients is her sire, Darley Horse of the Year, DA Adios+ – also bred by Cre Run Farm.

“We are so proud that Treasured Moments is being given this award,” said Deborah Mihaloff of Cre Run Farm. “Treasured Moments is only the sixth horse to receive this award in the United States. To think that one of the six is her sire, DA Adios+ (that we raised and raced) makes it extra special. Treasure could not have achieved the levels she did had it not been for her owner, rider, and partner, Jeremy Reynolds. They are truly one. She could not be loved more. And that is a breeder’s only wish.”

Bob Fauls, chairman of the Purebred Arabian Trust, concurs.

“The PAT is supportive of all disciplines associated with the purebred Arabian horse,” he said. “South America, the Middle East, Europe…. We’ve had the tremendous opportunity to travel the world and see endurance horses perform. Of all the disciplines, the Arabian horse is king in endurance, and yet it often receives so little recognition. Because of that, it was a great honour for us to be able to recognize this particular horse and its owners. Treasured Moments is one of the most recognizable endurance competitors in the world, both inside and outside the endurance community. The fact that she now joins her sire, DA Adios+, as one of the few recipients of the WAHO Trophy, makes it additionally sweet. The board of the Purebred Arabian Trust heartily extends its congratulations to Treasured Moments and her team from birth to present on this most deserving award.”

“Treasure never ceases to amaze us,” said Jeremy Reynolds. “The first time I met her, it was love at first sight. She loves competing. I feel honoured to have such a horse in my life. I wish everyone could have an Arabian Treasure like her.”

Despite her age, she continues to produce high-quality foals and it is hoped she will do so for more years to come, as her legacy and heritage in preserving and continuing the best lines of Lithuanian-bred Arabians is very important to the breeders and owners in Lithuania.

ARAHI SUPREMO 2023 WAHO Trophy Winner – New Zealand

ARAHI SUPREMO. Grey stallion, 2002. (Waimeha Mandate / Arahi Amiria)
Breeder & Owner: Arahi Family Trust. Strain: Dahman Um Amr of Ibn Hemsi (Dahma, 1876)

Arahi Supremo

Citation from his owners:

Our beautiful boy Arahi Supremo has been on quite the journey with Ken and Melanie at
Arahi Arabians during his 21 years. Now, living on our sixth property since he was born on
our farm at Ngaruawahia. I remember well the day he was born and the moment he stood up
that tail was lifted high! He moved around with us always so calmly and confidently…
humans were a lot more stressed!
As Arahi Supremo was by the legend in endurance, Waimeha Mandate, and we already had
three other full siblings – Arahi Gemm, Arahi Ari, Arahi Ahmaj, that were all fabulous riding
horses the decision was made to keep him as a stallion. How privileged we have been to
have owned, handled and bred with such a beautiful, trusting, kind and intelligent Arabian
stallion.
Broken in as a four year old the intention was to compete in endurance, but a severe kick to
the stifle by a mare who he was running with ended that dream, the recovery took some time
and he was never 100% sound again. His life as a breeding stallion continued and although
we could not take a lot of outside mares due to our business commitments, we managed to
breed a couple of foals most years.
We purchased the very good endurance mare Cyden Kay to put specifically to Arahi
Supremo and together they produced 10 foals in total for us, we sadly lost two fillies. His
kindness and sensibility impress all who visit or know him. He passes on correctness, lovely
light movement, responsive and generous horses with excellent heart rates. The riding
combinations develop wonderful partnerships due to that strong Arabian horse/human bond.
Arahi Supremo has 24 progeny registered with the New Zealand Arabian Horse Society – 18
of these to date have competed in endurance. In many cases these Arabians win or place at
their very first competitions, such is their natural ability and calm, sensible, trusting natures.
Arahi Supremo has won the New Zealand Endurance Breeder of the Year Trophy for Arahi
Arabians for the last two years. The record to date of these progeny is incredibly impressive:
63 x 1st Placings
15 x Best Managed Awards
31 x 2nd Placings
22 x 3rd Placings
17 x 4th Placings
A total to date of 17,486 qualified kilometres and well over 300 successful completions at
rides.
We are honoured that Arahi Supremo has been awarded this prestigious trophy.

At the age of 4 and 5 he crossed the Namib desert twice (400 km each time) once under the Olympian Ingrid Klimke and next with our son Hadrian who was just 11. He started his endurance career and won the 40 km category twice. This year he did his first 80 km ride with Hadrian with ease and super recovery times.

At the national show this year he became the Namibian Child rider Champion with Hadrian and  won the reserve gelding class in the halter.

In 2022 he crossed the desert in April with a tourist rider once again showing exceptional bravery going through quick sand . Shortly afterwards Hadrian, now 13, rode a 100 km endurance club ride with him, which he won with ease and excellent pulses. In August this year, he repeated that win on another  100 km race with an amazing time.

Due to Alexi’s sharp intelligence and extraordinary work ethic, it was a natural progression into the show ring. In 2013 Alexi started his show career competing in both Arabian and open show rings. Interestingly, Emerald J’s Polish ancestry on his dam’s side goes back in the 4th generation to the legendary Egyptian-born stallion Aswan, who was later used very successfully in Tersk, Russia, producing up to twenty foals a year. Her dam, Bo.A.S. Naganya, tops this, however, as her pedigree shows Aswan five times, twice in the dam line and three times in the sire line.

Bo.A.S. Emeraya sparkles in the ring and the most important she has a stunning and charming character.

KHWARENO KAMAAL SHAH 2022 WAHO Trophy Winner – Zimbabwe

KHWARENO KAMAAL SHAH  Chestnut Stallion, 2010. (Jerico Namutoni / Khwareno Corina)
Breeder: C.A. Hull  Owner: G. Stafford  Strain: Kehailan Rodan (Rodania, 1869)

The Arab Horse Society of Zimbabwe are delighted to announce the winner of their 2022 WAHO Trophy is the stallion Khwareno Kamaal Shah.

Citation from the Secretary, Matthew Harwin:

Khwareno Kamaal Shah was bred and born at the locally renowned Khwareno Stud which is considered a ‘founding’ or ‘pioneer’ stud in Zimbabwe having its purebred Arabian breeding program being established in the 1970s. Kamaal is awarded the WAHO trophy as we believe him to be a true ambassador for the ‘Zimbabwean Arabian’ having won the 21 kilometre Lake Chivero Endurance Challenge across rigid African bush terrain up mountains and through rivers. As Kamaal is a stallion, he was required to start the race last behind all other competitors and horses. With his incredible performance, he was able to overtake his fellow competitors and finish the race in first place. Khwareno Kamaal Shah descends from original Zimbabwean foundation bloodlines on his dam line with imported blood being infused through his South African born sire. He is a great example of the type of horse our nation can produce.

Aspen Hills Sabih & Julia Latham

Citation from his owner, Julia Latham:
Aspen Hills Sabih (Charlie) came into my life 8 years ago as a very green, very gangly and uncoordinated 5-year-old. I wanted a horse that was ready to go out and compete. Charlie was definitely not that horse! But there was just something about him that I couldn’t resist, and I ended up taking him home to Flying Horse.
The first couple of years we took things slowly. I was competing my other horses so could spend time getting him more balanced with lots of hacking and bodywork as well as sorting out a diet so he gained weight. I could see his potential even if my friends thought I was mad.
When my competition horse retired Charlie had to step up. My long term trainer Bill Noble was supportive and encouraging in my goal to turn Charlie into a dressage horse. But it was a battle! Charlie was spooky, suspicious and had the fastest swerve! Not to mention the concentration span of a goldfish! I have never fallen off as much as I did off him! So many people told me to give up on him! But every so often I got a glimpse of brilliance and those glimpses kept me going. I just knew that inside the anxious, worried horse was a beautiful kind soul just waiting to blossom.
We started competing at Preliminary level and he was terrible! But we kept at it and as he went up the grades he improved and I realised he was better with more movements in the test. Just when he was starting to get it together, he developed a sarcoid on his inside left hind. After many months of treatment which he endured stoically despite the pain and depression associated, the treatment worked and we were back in business. We continued working on our dressage and at Novice level he started to listen. At Elementary level he started getting better scores, at Medium level he started getting placed.
Being a very small, very blingy chestnut with a very wavy tail made us stand out at dressage. He scared a lot of the big Warmbloods and would usually pick one to terrorise with lots of snorting and tail waving!. Some judges struggled to judge him as he was so different to the other horses in his classes. Before Covid arrived Charlie had a couple of Advanced Medium starts and was starting to get taken seriously in the dressage arena. At our last Advanced Medium start in Cromwell he was awful, I had no control and he was anxious and stressed. It turned out he has developed an issue with his teeth causing hypersensitivity to cold. It was minus 5˚C at Cromwell and he just couldn’t cope with the cold. Another setback as contact issues are severely penalised in dressage. We are managing the condition, but the outside temperature determines how he feels. Hopefully he can continue his dressage career and be an ambassador for his breed.
We have done a few A&P shows in-hand and he loved the whole show atmosphere. The bigger the audience the more he showed off. One of my goals was to go to the South Island Arabian Championships in Christchurch. It’s a big trip for us living at the bottom of the South Island (9 hours drive) so I wanted to make sure we were ready. Our first time I really didn’t have clue what to do but we managed quite a few placings. In 2021, we had a super South Island Championships being placed in every class and winning the High Points Purebred Gelding and also the High Points Horse of the Show trophy.
The 2022 South Island Championships I was unsure about taking Charlie due to the cold temperatures. We decided to go even with a less than ideal run-up as I hadn’t competed at all due to Covid cancelling events and having time off due to cracking a vertebrae in my lower back, from coming off Charlie. The weather was awful, so I had absolutely no expectations at all, I was just grateful for the chance to compete and if Charlie couldn’t cope with the temperature then we would just retire. But he just got better and better! He won every class he entered in-hand and ridden, bar the Classic Head where he placed third and ended up Novice Champion, Paced and Mannered Champion, Champion Ridden Purebred and finally Supreme Champion of Show.

Charlie with some of his winnings

Although extremely proud of our competition career I am even more proud of Charlie’s day job. As part of our equestrian business, we run an Equine Therapy programme for at risk children. We work with Oranga Tamariki, Barnardos and local schools plus private clients. Our therapy programme has been developed exclusively here at Flying Horse and has been successful in changing the lives of hundreds of children. Charlie has a special affinity with children who self-harm or have tried to commit suicide. He’s always been a ‘bitey’ horse and when he first arrived would often bite himself when anxious. I think that’s why he is so good with them. He knows what it feels like to be consumed by worry. It’s incredible watching him being so gentle with these kids and being absolutely focused on them.

I started a Facebook Page for Charlie a few years ago so people could follow our journey; the good bits and the bad bits! I want people to realise it’s not all plain sailing. I want people to realise how amazing, gentle and talented Arabians are and that you don’t need a purpose bred horse to do dressage. Arabians truly are heart horses; they are as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside. Bred for centuries to share the lives of their owners, Arabians need a job to do that involves interacting with their human. Charlie is not just my horse, he gives a little bit of himself to every child he connects with.

SD MENGALI 2021 WAHO TROPHY WINNER – BELGIUM

SD MENGALI  Chestnut Gelding, 1999. (Menesco MB / Pinsa D).  Breeder: Sabrina Francois, SD Arabian Horses. Owner: Pietro Di Geronimo.  Strain: Kehailan Ajuz (Hagar, 1872)

BAPS is pleased to announced their 2021 WAHO Trophy winner is the remarkable endurance competitor, SD Mengali.

SD Mengali ridden by Pierrot Di Geronimo

There are horses which – without necessarily landing prestigious victories, picking up international medals or racking up championship podium places – make their mark courtesy of the regularity of their performance, their sheer tenacity and personality, and in doing so define an era, an entire generation and beyond.  In the world of Belgian endurance competition, the above certainly applies to SD Mengali whose high level of constancy and consistency over a 12-year career continue to command admiration and huge respect to this very day.

The veritable phenomenon that is this liver chestnut gelding, no taller than 150cm with a tough and sturdy character, was born in 1999, bred by Dominique and Sabrina Francois at their SD Arabians in the southwest of Belgium.  His pedigree comprises mainly Russian bloodlines with additional old English and Crabbet lines, both known for their excellence in producing not just show horses but also top quality endurance horses.

The long-time owner of SD Mengali, Pierrot Di Geronimo, who was a member of the armed forces and an excellent sportsman, only took up riding at the age of 40.  When he acquired SD Mengali as a 4-year old in 2003, all he originally wanted was a horse for his wife, Pascale Blanche, for some gentle riding and trekking.  Before long, attracted by the idea of the sport of endurance, Pierrot took over the ride.  He made up for his lack of technical skills by an incredible number of long and slow rides out on the hills, as he had the benefit of living in an area which eminently lends itself to this type of training. Showing lots of patience and a highly meticulous approach, Pierrot managed to turn the young SD Mengali into a genuine athlete over the course of two years. Impressed by the rider-horse pairing, veterinarian Isabelle Caudron showed the duo the way to endurance racing, where they were very quickly spotted by the staff of the Belgian National team. This marked the start of a beautiful true story.

Between 2005 and 2017, and despite some time off due to injury, SD Mengali finished 21 International Endurance Races, covering distances varying from 80 to 160 km, with a success rate of around 80%, feeling at home on any kind of terrain, whether this be mountain or desert.  He also completed numerous national trials between 20 and 80 km. He completed no fewer than twelve 160-km races and 7 Belgian National Team selections.  SD Mengali represented Belgium in 4 Endurance World Championships (2008, Malaysia; 2010, USA; 2012, UK; and 2016, Slovakia) and 3 European championships in 2009, 2011 and 2013. In 2009 and 2011, SD Mengali joined the lofty ranks of the European Top 10.  When he was retired from competition at the end of the 2017 season at a venerable 18 years of age, SD Mengali had completed 34,000 kilometres, 4,500 of them in competitions.

“Mengali and Pierrot, Pierrot and Mengali”. Two names that were inseparable for over a decade, which, to this very day, command huge respect for their flawless track record, even though it did not come with honorary titles or medals. Humble, discreet, hard-working, patient, self-sacrificing and bound by a close-knit bond. The story of this pairing is a lesson in values.

Today, SD Mengali, Pierrot and Pascale still live in the Ardennes that are so dear to them, based at the European Horse Centre of Mont-le-Soie as the stables’ caretakers. Remaining active into what will soon be his 23rd year, SD Mengali is taken out for long daily rides by Pascale. In 2021, he added another 1,500 kilometres to his name.  Meanwhile Pierrot, now at age 65, seems to have finally found a worthy successor for SD Mengali in another liver chestnut gelding, Hahdes Nheeon, born in 2014 and again mainly of Russian and old English bloodlines, which he has already trained up to International level. Why change the habit of a lifetime?

AHIRA BINT NARYM 2020 WAHO Trophy Winner – Switzerland

AHIRA BINT NARYM.  Bay Mare, 2001.  Narym / Asari Bint Grand.  Breeder & Owner:  Marie-Therese Vögtlin-Erlacher.  Strain:  Obeya Om Jrees (El Obeya Om Grees)

The SZAP is pleased to announce the winner of their 2020 WAHO Trophy is the 19-year old mare, Ahira Bint Narym.

Marie-Therese Vögtlin-Erlacher with Ahira Bint Narym  (Photo credit: Stefan Graf)

Citation by the Owner’s family:

On May 1st 2001, the bay mare Ahira Bint Narym was born at Shareefah Arabians (named after Ahira’s grandmother Shareefah), representing the 2nd breeding generation at the farm.

The name Ahira means “forever” and according to this motto Ahira has lived with her breeder from birth until today. Three quarters of her breeding is Russian and one quarter Egyptian. Her dam Asari Bint Grand was already very successful in show and dressage competitions.

As a filly foal, Ahira was awarded Gold at the Swiss National Stud Show in August 2001 and won the filly class with the equal highest score, shared with Balinka who was bred by Didier & Ivana Thiévent. The following year Ahira was 2nd in the yearling mare class at the C-Show in Holziken, Switzerland.

She inherited her show talent from her dam Asari Bint Grand (Grand/Shareefah), who won three gold medals at shows and was awarded the highest score of 7.9 for the best Swiss-bred Arabian mare in 2003. Ahira’s full brother Stromboli Ibn Narym was also named best colt at the 2002 foal show. From her sire Narym (Balaton/Nemara) Ahira inherited the outer appearance, the bay colour and also a lot of show potential.

Ahira spent her youth on the spacious Swiss mountain pastures of the Hossle family on the Bürten farm in Reigoldswil, where she was able to enjoy her early life to the fullest and thus grow into a pretty, harmonious, kind mare without any pressure to perform. At the age of 3 she returned to her home stable, re-joining her mother and grandmother.

Without any pressure of time, we carefully got Ahira used to saddle and rider. We always put great importance to our Arabian horses not only presenting themselves well at shows, but also being able to perform well under saddle.

We trained Ahira ourselves to a medium dressage level and successfully competed in various dressage competitions over the years, also against warmbloods, in the GA/L classes (Novice and Elementary levels).

In 2013 she took a baby break and gave us a beautiful filly by the Danish Warmblood dressage stallion, Glock’s Zonik.

In 2020 Ahira Bint Narym passed the performance test in dressage, a remarkable achievement for a Pure-bred Arabian mare aged 19.

She is a lovely mare and very willing to perform.  Her sensitive nature, which she inherited from her sire Narym, did not always make dressage riding easy.  This is one of the reasons we appreciate her successes even more.

Messi racing

Citation from Nelly Philippot-Hermanne, President AHRCB (Arabian Horse Racing Club of Belgium):

After two very impressive second places in Group I races in France during the autumn, the home-bred and home-trained Messi went on to win one of the most prestigious international races of the 2020 season.  This great achievement is well deserving of the WAHO Trophy award, as it marks a first for Belgium in terms of obtaining such a result.

The Keersmaeker-family started over 25 years ago breeding show-Arabians, but with athletic potential.  Their horses, mostly of Russian bloodlines proved their success in this goal during the early races organized in Belgium by AHRCB. When the French racing Arabians came beating our local-breds, Viktor and Darien and their son Timo decided to breed with some French bloodlines in their quest for a winning race-Arabian.  They imported Hase de Colmar (Tidjani / Cheri Bibi) and bred Jeanne d’ Arc out of her, by Dormane, first racing both of these mares before they turned to their breeding duties.  All the offspring of Jeanne d’ Arc, with different French-bred sires, have been very good race-horses, but none has proven himself like Messi did this season.

The stud of Timo Keersmaeker, Vido Arabians, has now shrunk to a dozen horses, due to the age of Viktor and the passing of Darien.  Among them the best is undoubtedly the 8 year old Messi, already a proven racehorse with many wins and places to his credit in Belgium.  Despite the heavy professional workload on Timo, he decided to train Messi himself at home this season, and the results were quickly there: two wins in Belgium as soon as racing could re-start after Covid-confinement (June), one second place in Germany and next he decided to go for the major challenges: two Group I races in France in the autumn, against some of the best horses of Europe, in both of which Messi finished an excellent second.  In fact he was beaten by only a short head in the the Qatar Arabian World Cup, the Arabian equivalent of the Arc de Triomphe.

Timo then decided to aim ever higher, and try a trip to the Middle East for one of their most prestigious and valuable races, worth over a million Euros: the Sheikh Zayed Jewel Crown at the Abu Dhabi Equestrian Clup.  Messi’s incredible 3.5 lengths victory in this Group 1 race, in which he overpowered a world-class international field, was truly a stellar performance.

Congratulations are due not just to Messi himself, but also to his breeders and owners the Keersmaekers family, to his trainer Timo Keersmaekers, as well as to his jockey Patrick Dobbs.

KALHARABI JANIE 2020 WAHO Trophy Winner – Namibia

KALHARABI JANIE   Chestnut Mare, 2012.  (FS Simply Illustrious / Danon Jawwaad).  Breeder & Owner: George Wessels.  Strain:  Kehaileh Rodanieh (Rodania, 1869)

The Arab Horse Breeders Society of Namibia is pleased to announce that the winner of their 2020 WAHO Trophy is the mare Kalharabi Janie, a top mare of the Kalharabi stud of Mr George Wessels.  She has proved her outstanding quality as an endurance horse in the Namib dunes of Walvisbay and has been awarded the WAHO Trophy in recognition of her excellent career in endurance.

Citation from the owner:  “We are very proud of Kalharabi Janie as she achieved 2nd place at the 2019 Walvisbay Endurance Championship in the Standard Weight division.  Walvisbay Endurance Championship is the toughest endurance course in Southern Africa and a good test for mental and physical performance of horses.

There was only a difference of a split second from the winner’s time as the race ended with a finishing sprint between three Standard Weight horses. Janie also received the Best Condition Award in the Standard Weight category. The award is decided by a panel of vets that judges the horse’s physical appearance and soundness together with the results of the ride throughout. She was an absolute stunner after the gruelling ride and awed everyone with her energetic strong performance.

She then also astonished by winning against all winners of Best Condition Awards the ‘Best of the Best’ Award. That was also the first time ever that she did the distance of 120 km.

The first and second (Kalharabi Janie) place horses’ overall time of the ride was also the fastest time of completion of all categories that took part in the ride.

After all, we just love her determined spirit and loving temperament that makes her not only an outstanding athlete but a horse that is permanently engraved in our hearts.”

It is worth noting that her dam, Danon Jawaad, is also a successful endurance competitor, and that this is the fourth time since 2005 that horses bred by Kalharabi Stud have won the WAHO Trophy, which is a very notable achievement.

ZOHREH MOJADAM 2020 WAHO Trophy Winner – Iran

ZOHREH MOJADAM.  Grey Mare, 1988. (Raad / Etrik).  Breeder: Haji Sheikh Abdollah Mojadami.  Owner:  Haji Jamshid Heidari.  Strain:  Kehaileh (Koheile Samer)

The 2020 WAHO Trophy winner selected for Iran is the exceptional broodmare, the 32-year old Zohreh Mojadam.  She belongs to an old Khusistani family, and is a celebrated mare, both in her own right and because she has made such a great contribution to keeping these important old Iranian bloodlines going, with her many excellent descendants.

Her name Zohreh means Venus, it is interesting to note that she was named as a filly by the late Mary Gharagozlou, thus giving her an even stronger connection to the traditions, history and heritage of Iranian Arabian horses.

Although she was retired from breeding in 2014, her very kind owner, Haji Jamshid Heidari, still treasures this lovely old mare.  Of course at 32 years she is showing her age, as this recent photo show, but her quality and wonderful kind temperament still shine through.

LATIF GHAZAL  Bay Stallion, 2009.  (Ghazal Imdal / Uva).  Owner and Breeder:  JK Wood-Service Team.  Strain:  Obeyan (Karima).

The Czech National Association for Purebred Arabian Horses – ACHPAK,  awarded their 2019 WAHO Trophy to the 10 year old stallion, Latif Ghazal.  The Trophy was awarded in recognition of his successful participation representing his country in international CEIO1*, CEIO2*,  CEI1* and CEI2* endurance competitions since 2016, ridden by either Petra Kokorova or Nikol Kokorova.  His pedigree is Straight Egyptian, with several generations spanning some 40 years of domestic breeding on his dam line.  He is an excellent ambassador for the Czech Republic’s Arabian horses and breeding programmes.

BEIROUT – 2019 WAHO Trophy Winner – Iran

BEIROUT  Chestnut mare, 1995.  (Soveidani / Heileh).  Breeder:  Mr. Ghanad Beiravieh.  Owner:  Mr. Gholam Hossein Bamian.  Strain:  Seglawieh Deheimi.

The 2019 WAHO Trophy winner selected for Iran is the splendid 24-year old mare, Beirout.  Descended entirely from old Iranian bloodlines, she is a celebrated for her success both as a racehorse and as a show mare.  She is an exceptionally fine example of her breed.

As a younger mare, she was a very good racehorse, winning several times.  In more recent times, she has excelled in the show classes for straight Iranian bred horses.  She has also produced some fine offspring, themselves now entering the breeding herd to preserve these very important old bloodlines.

ARAHI TAHI 2020 WAHO Trophy Winner – New Zealand

ARAHI TAHI.  Chestnut Gelding, 2004.  (Ranaarb / Arahi Amiria).  Breeder: The Arahi Family Trust.  Owner: Natasha Guest.  Strain:  Dahman Um Amr of Ibn Hemsi (Dahma, 1876)

The New Zealand Arabian Horse Society is pleased to announced that the winner of their 2020 WAHO Trophy is the talented all-rounder, Arahi Tahi.  This handsome gelding, who is of 100% Crabbet bloodlines, is the epitome of the versatile Arabian, competing not only in events traditionally dominated by Arabian horses such as Endurance up to FEI level, Competitive Trail Riding and Arabian Showing, but also consistently placing in the Cowboy Challenge and Versatile Ranch Horse arena where Arabians are not seen as the go-to breed.  He is definitely an outstanding ambassador for the breed in New Zealand.

Arahi Tahi and Natasha Guest negotiating an obstacle successfully in a Cowboy Challenge event.

Citation written by his owner, Natasha Guest:

The first time I saw Arahi Tahi he was 5 years old and I thought he was perfectly average.  He was grazing on our property and although he was pretty enough, with correct movement, smooth trot and a nice enough face, he was a bit nervy and he looked just like my old horse Pal. However, where Pal had this incredible presence about him bordering on arrogance, Tahi seemed happier in the rear of the pack, standing as still as possible, a whisper of air sending him snorting off to the far end of the paddock, never managing to muster up the courage to come over.

“Would you like to ride him?” came the query. I was thinking of taking on a project horse. Currently competing endurance on my Mum’s opinionated competitive mare, I was thinking of getting a second horse to bring on and sell. Due to Mum’s horse’s strong willed yet unconfident nature I had been taking lessons in natural horsemanship – I was by no means an expert, but it had given me some confidence in dealing with young horses. “He’s perfectly sane. Jody Hartstone broke him in. She said there was nothing wrong with him he just pushed back a little. But I’m sure you can handle him. If not just give him back… and we’ll pay you for your time?”. It seemed a good deal and some extra cash would be appreciated so I agreed.  Tahi was already grazing at our property so we began the process of making friends.

Initially his “looky-loo” nature worried his nervous rider and I decided a “slow and steady” approach to bringing him on was necessary. Lots of groundwork and lots of long slow walks down the race or in the arena with friends. He began to realise that this riding caper was actually quite fun and started to relax and enjoy himself. Riding became an adventure and he became easier and easier to catch, as humans represented something fun (and they often had treats in their pockets too!).  He could still scuttle out from underneath me at the slightest movement from a moth and I can’t count the times I hit the deck. Ever the gentleman, however, he would always wait for me if I came off and was most apologetic, gently putting his nose to my shoulder if I didn’t get up fast enough. I never had to walk home.  I felt safe on his back (despite the issue with moths!) and at that time I decided to buy him myself. A price was agreed upon and Arahi Tahi officially became my horse.

Endurance

As our partnership grew so did the confidence in each other and gradually we stepped out of the safety of the arena/raceway and began getting the process of graduating through the endurance grades. Our first outing was at the infamous “Mary’s Rules” ride in Morrinsville held at Christmas each year. A fun relaxed outing where you can opt to go out as many times as you like around the 8km course, I headed out on Tahi for a quiet ride with my friend Tania on her new horse, Arahi Abidan (Danny) and just for fun we brought Tania’s young daughter on our 28-year-old RDA pony, Sergeant. Tania and I jokingly pleading for a shot of whiskey to calm our nerves before riding but were denied this request, so it was deep breaths and soft contact all the way round. However we needn’t have bothered. Danny, being slightly older, had done much of this before and was a perfect gentleman, Tahi followed suit. Coming back to me quickly when frightened he relaxed and walked freely about the course taking leadership and confidence from myself and Danny as the need arose. And as 28-year-old Sergeant went flying about the course in stereotypical “old man” style, Tahi barely blinked, mostly happy to quietly stroll about course in his own company. I realised then that I had my “forever horse”.

Tahi quickly became the “go to” horse for new and inexperienced riders. At just 6 years old he carried a nervous 14 year old round her first endurance ride, countless other newbies also took up the reins over the years and last year aged 14, he carried my 3.5 year old nephew round his first ever 4km lead rein event. He walked at snail’s pace as groups of horses flew past on their own events.

A flurry of endurance events followed that first one, quickly I became to rely on Tahi to get me through when my own nerves took over. When I was scared he came straight back to me, listening intently until I was ready to go forward. One time in a competitive 40km event I was in a group of 10 horses cantering up and down hills when I looked down and saw that his renegade boot had twisted and was almost off his foot. I leapt off and righted it and it was then that I realised two things. Firstly, I wasn’t holding on to the reins and secondly the rest of the horses had thundered past and left us, disappearing over the hill we were alone. Tahi stood rock still and watched them go, waiting patiently for permission to follow. And another day we overnighted next to an active railway track, that night the train came through and 30 odd Arabs flew to the other side of the paddock tails high and snorting. All except one. He, who is scared of moths, stood in his pen, desperately looking around for what could have set off his new friends.

As a youngster we decided on entering a couple of local A&P shows, just for the exposure. It was an eye-opening experience. There were horses in carts, kids shooting down inflatable slides, donkeys, miniature horses and small children in all directions. Tahi barely blinked, even when the man on stilts came past and the rest of the ring went flying tails-high to the opposite side of the arena. He went home with the Reserve Champion in hand that day and a few weeks later went home with another reserve champion in hand and a champion under saddle as well.

His endurance career continued to be the main focus but with his ultra-chill nature and my desire to not take myself too seriously, we started to enter some “different” types of events, fancy dress day at the local adult riding group, Hoofball, more A&P shows, more outings at Mary’s day and even a Le Trek competition.

In 2015 we started to take our endurance career more seriously and aimed to compete in the 100km 1* event at the ESNZ National Çhampionships held at Taupo, however the start of my ongoing health issues would nearly put a stop to his campaign. Fortunately, 15 year old Rebecca was on hand to step in and rode him round the 100km course. At loops 1, 2 and 3 they were sitting even with the leaders however at loop 4 a group decision was made that Rebecca would back off and we would accept the runner up position. He easily cruised about the rest of the course and the blue sash was obtained and treasured.

With our plans for long distance competition going astray, Tahi and I began competing in Competitive Trail Riding. Tahi’s calm nature meant that CTR riding was a breeze and he regularly dominated the placings. Including placing 4th out of a competitive field of 12 at the 2017 ESNZ CTR Intermediate Championships. We began introducing many riders to this sport and Tahi developed a name for himself as the cruisey horse to ride with if you needed to get your young horse to chill. We also accompanied many a child around the course while worried parents waited back at base. Tahi’s easy going nature meant it was easy to keep an eye on our young charges and many of those kids are still riding today.

As his rider’s health issues continued to take over, it was at this stage that we stumbled upon an up and coming sport that quickly caught our attention.

Cowboy Challenge

Cowboy Challenge is a western based sport that promotes partnership and excellence in horsemanship. Horse and rider combinations compete over a course of 13 obstacles as outlined in the New Zealand Cowboy Challenge Rulebook. A score is awarded per obstacle based on the horse’s handling of the obstacles as well as their approach and departure. Bonus points are awarded for horsemanship and speed. After the first round, the Top 10 horses will go into round two and compete for the top six placings that are on offer. In order to succeed in this sport horses must be well mannered, soft, athletic and work with their rider to solve the problems put in front of them. The obstacles faced are based on what combinations might find while out riding the trails and range from performance based movements (such as sliding stops, side-passes, performing a western rollback or spin) and also negotiating obstacles (such as dropping down a steep bank, riding through a tunnel, pulling an object behind the horse, walking over a tarp, roping a cow or even firing a gun).

Tahi’s introduction to Cowboy Challenge came at a New Zealand Cowboy Challenge Association Points Approved Challenge being held at Lakes Ranch, Rotorua, over Labour Weekend in 2016. Looking completely out of place, decked out in brightly coloured biothane endurance tack with a Leon Liversage enduro-light saddle and myself wearing tights and a short-sleeved endurance shirt with “Waitomo Endurance” blazoned across the front, a little Arab gelding and his rider nervously lined up amongst 13 fancy quarter horses and their traditional leather gear. After round one he was sitting in second place and once the scores were tallied for round two we were placed third overall and a new addiction was born. Since that date he has entered several more points approved Cowboy Challenges and numerous local Challenges, consistently placing in the top 6, only on one occasion has he missed out on a second round. He stands out on the Cowboy Challenge field, a field dominated by solid looking quarter horses and stationbred types, his dainty Arab movement and high tail carriage draw attention, however he consistently holds his own.

After our very first season of serious competition under the NZCCA rules, Tahi and I gained the necessary 15 graded points to qualify from the Rookie system and compete at Intermediate level. We placed 4th in New Zealand for the Rookie Points Buckle at the end of the 2018-2019 season. Our 2019-2020 season was our first season competing at Intermediate level and it has been a daunting yet rewarding experience. September 2019 was our first competition and we were up against a tough line up. When his rider’s nerves took over, Tahi calmly and quietly tackled each obstacle, gaining confidence and enthusiasm for the course as we went around. After round 1 we were announced first, and nerves took over as we headed into round 2. A few small mistakes at the first 2 obstacles, but we quickly found our rhythm and we cruised around to take out first place, the red sash taking pride of place on our wall of fame. Tahi will continue to compete at Intermediate level throughout the 2019-2020 season, and the intention is for a young rider to take up the reins in 2020-21 in the youth division alongside myself competing intermediate.

Versatile Ranch Horse

VRH Huntly is a competition where horses compete across a number of western based disciplines, starting with cattle work (team penning and team sorting) before competing over a cowboy challenge course, then barrel racing and pole bending.  A horse needs to be patient, confident and as the name suggests, versatile.

Tahi consistently scores in the cattle work classes as he calmly and confidently moves about, sorting his chosen cattle. His athleticism comes in to play when he has to sort them, and he actively and calmly rises to the occasion. Barrel racing and pole bending are easily completed, and he regularly finishes the day in the top 5 overall. Also featuring at Versatile Ranch Horse is the Mounted Shooting days which has fast become a favourite discipline.

Mounted Shooting:

Tahi and I were first introduced to Mounted Shooting via friends that we met at the Versatile Ranch Horse days. I was keen to know more and so headed down to the Mounted Shooting “Have a Go” day held at Kihikihi in early 2019.

Mounted Shooting is a new sport to New Zealand shores. Riders compete over a set pattern to race against the clock while firing a single action revolver at stationary targets (namely helium balloons). The small gun produces an explosion of tiny shrapnel which, if aimed correctly (!) causes the balloon to burst. While there is no actual bullet there is a burst of smoke and noise and even the most confident horse can react negatively.

On our first day we attended with my friend on her big paint mare. A few other nervous looking faces were also in attendance alongside some experienced shooters riding their up and coming horses. We were all asked to hang back behind the instructor. He would fire some warning shots into the air while we did what needed to do to keep our horses calm. Fuelled with nerves I gripped my saddle horn. The first shot rang out. Horses shot in all directions as riders quickly got them under control ready for the next one. Except mine. Tahi figured out where the shot was coming from and while the initial bang made him pay attention, his feet did not move. We followed our leader about the course with shots being fired into the air. Tahi becoming more and more inquisitive leading the rest of the newcomers tightly bunched in behind him. Our instructor turned to a more experienced rider “the little Arab has got it sussed. His rider looks terrified (!) but he’s fine.”  I was sent off with John and handed a gun. Our trainer was correct, Tahi by this stage was bored but I was slightly white knuckled and fuelled with anxious anticipation. I was shown how to hold the gun correctly and given a basic pattern to ride while firing blanks at the target. I took aim, gripped my saddle horn and fired. And again nothing happened. Tahi barely blinked and the members of our group were all so impressed with his chilled-out attitude. I was given a loaded gun and we were sent out to get stuck in. Tahi gently trotted amongst the patterns, barely bothered by the explosions or the other horses. We were ready for our first run.

A mock competition was held that afternoon with the attendees, Tahi easily won it. Although still only confident enough to walk and trot he easily carried me where we needed to be, patiently waiting while I took aim. Tahi and I had found another sport we enjoyed. A second competition followed a few months later at a Versatile Ranch Horse club day. Again, entered in the rookie ranks we won our heats and were even able to push up the pace and try a few canters. As more competitions are planned, our goal for this season is to partake in each.

Arahi Tahi is the epitome of the versatile Arabian, competing not only in events traditionally dominated by Arabian horses such as Endurance, CTR and Arabian Showing, but also consistently placing in the Cowboy Challenge and Versatile Ranch Horse arena where Arabians are not seen as the go-to breed. He is an absolute pleasure to do anything with and he has taught me so much. Described by a friend of mine as an “old soul” the label suits him well. He comes right down to a rider’s level, walking like Grandma’s horse for kids and nervous adults, while easily finding the accelerator for more confident riders. He is a fantastic ambassador for the breed. We get comments wherever we go about his calm and sensible nature. We are always looking for the next opportunity to demonstrate the versatility, loyalty and intelligence of the Arabian breed. Moving in to the next season I hope to do more Cowboy Challenge Competition with him as well as compete with Distance Riding New Zealand, Cowboy Mounted Shooting, Versatile Ranch Horse as well as taking part in our first Extreme Cowboy Race.

ARISTOKRATAS 2020 WAHO Trophy Winner – Lithuania

ARISTOKRATAS.  Grey stallion, 2008.  (Grafik / Alka). Breeder:  JSC Vilniaus Zirgynas.  Owner:  JSC Lietuvos Zirgynas.  Strain: Hamdani Simri (Selma)

The Lithuanian Arabian Horse Association is happy to announce that the winner of their WAHO Trophy 2020 is the 12-year old stallion, Aristokratas.

Aristokratas is sired by the Polish stallion Grafik (Eukaliptus / Gaskonia) who was leased by Vilnius Stud for the 2007 breeding season from Michalow Stud.  His dam Alka (by Elbrus out of Aquatoria, descended from the great foundation broodmare, Taktika) herself won Lithuania’s 2007 WAHO Trophy.  She has been a highly esteemed broodmare at her home Stud with 11 excellent foals to her credit, several of them also used in the State Stud breeding programme.  It is worth noting that her son Abatas, also a breeding stallion, won Lithuania’s WAHO Trophy in 2006.

A show winner in the past, Aristokratas has already proved himself as an excellent sire, with very promising progeny.  He has an excellent temperament and, with his pedigree and accomplishments, is sure to be a great asset to his home Stud.

NAGELJ Z 2021 WAHO Trophy Winner – Slovenia

NAGELJ Z Grey Stallion 2011 (Muranas Jassehr / Nachta) Breeder & Owner: Marjan Zupančič Strain: Kehailan Moradi (Sahara)

Since 2008 breeder Marjan Zupančič has been on the search for the quality purebred Arabian mare and in 2010 he has found Nachta. Nachta arrived from Belgium to Slovenia in 2007 and Marjan did not hesitate to buy her in 2010 from fellow breeder Bojan Zagorc.

Since Marjan has previously reserved the breeding of Muranas Jassehr in 2008, Nachta was sent to Germany in May 2010 and in April 2011 Nachta delivered a magnificent colt on Marjan’s farm. Marjan and his wife Darja named him NAGELJ Z and put high hopes in the newborn colt. Nagelj Z developed into a great young stallion and was licensed in 2014 at the stallion licensing in Slovenia. His progeny has proudly carried the sire’s name into the show world – his colt JASMIN Z (Nagelj Z x Yamala Z) being the most successful:

OMAKA AMEERA 2021 WAHO Trophy Winner – New Zealand

OMAKA AMEERA  Bay Mare, 2009.  (Lexington Tequila / Taralea Trafeiya).  Breeder:  Peter Goulter.  Owner:  Sandy Stanway.  Strain:  Kehaileh Rodanieh (Rodania, 1869)

The New Zealand Arabian Horse Society is very pleased to announce that the winner of their 2021 WAHO Trophy is the lovely mare Omaka Ameera.

Citation by the owner:  Omaka Ameera is not only a well performed Arabian horse but she is an incredible ambassador for the Arabian Breed.  Known at home as Trinity, she is trained to a very high standard using natural horsemanship techniques and is very advanced both under saddle and at liberty (when she is free with no restraints of any kind) which are demonstrated in the various public displays that I do.

When at liberty Trinity follows my very subtle instructions to complete many tasks including transitions between all gaits, moving forwards, backwards, sideways and circling. Of particular note is that she will complete a backwards circle around me on command, when completely at liberty, one of only a few horses globally who can do this in public. She also works as a member of my multiple horse liberty demonstration team.

Under saddle Trinity is my key horse, whom I ride when doing my multiple horse ridden demonstrations. I work up to two additional horses whilst riding her, with them at liberty following my instructions and sometimes whilst they are online.  Trinity not only tolerates me having multiple ropes and whips waving around the place, she is also a superb leader for the other horses.  Trinity allows me to stand up on her as part of these demonstrations, and her most recent achievement is her remaining standing still whilst I am mounted on her and instruct a horse next to her to lie down (this is incredibly hard to do).

Some recent events she has competed in:

  • 2020 International Liberty Horse Association Championship Show (USA/Virtual)
    • Reserve Champion – Advanced Obstacle class
    • 3rd place Bridle-less Class
  • 2020 New Zealand Arabian National Championships Show Costume (Top Three)
  • 2020 New Zealand Arabian National Championships Working Arabian (Reserve Champion)
  • 2020 Intermediate Cowboy Challenge (Pleasant Point)
  • 2020 Canterbury Working Equitation show
  • 2020 Le Cust teams multidisciplinary event
  • 2020 Registered Level 1 Dressage – multiple events (North Canterbury Equestrian Group)
  • 2020 Flying Horse Arabians in Dressage Series (3rd in mature rider, 5th in Bronze purebred)
  • 2020 Brumby Farm Virtual Tournament (5th professionals division – out of 100 people from 8 countries)
  • 2019 South Island Arabian Championships (Reserve Champion Mare)
  • 2019 South Island Arabian Championships (Versatility Class Winner)
  • 2018 Equidays South Island Top Talent Competition, both ridden and at Liberty in front of 1000 people, and in full Arabian Costume (Runner-up – to the Wilson Sisters)

She has also performed in the following:

  • 2020 Celebration of Natural Horsemanship – performing in front of over 100 people
  • 2020 Swannanoa Primary school pet day demonstration – 500 people
  • 2019 Celebration of Natural Horsemanship – performing in front of over 100 people
  • Equidays 2019 – night show in front of 2500 people
  • Equidays 2019 – Clinic horse – demonstrating advanced Liberty in front of hundreds of people

Trinity also regularly hacks out at the forest or beach, including often ponying young horses for their first time at those locations to give them much needed experience. She has helped numerous people with their riding journeys, from those new to riding, needing to regain confidence, more advanced riding techniques, to just giving kids pony rides.

Trinity has also starred in a Facebook video that I made called “20 Ways to Trailer Load a Horse”.  It shows Trinity loading onto a horse float in 20 different ways, relaxed and happy and being an incredible partner for me. This video has had over 11,000 views.

Trinity is a great advertisement for the Arabian horse and in my view is the best possible ambassador for the breed.

SIMEON SAADA 2020 WAHO Trophy Winner – Australia

SIMEON SAADA.   Grey Mare, 1990.  (Asfour / Simeon Safanad).  Breeder and Owner: Marion Richmond, Simeon Stud.  Strain:  Hadbah Enzahieh (Venus)

The Arabian Horse Society of Australia is delighted to announce that the winner of their 2020 WAHO Trophy is the esteemed broodmare Simeon Saada.

Citation by Marion Richmond, written in early 2020:  “The news that Simeon Saada was awarded the 2020 WAHO Trophy for Australia was received with great enthusiasm and celebration by everyone at Simeon Stud. Saada remains a favourite at Simeon, while epitomising the classic Arabian mare I envisioned when the journey towards an exclusively Straight Egyptian breeding program began in 1976.  Saada is a living testament to the original Simeon Straight Egyptian foundation stock, tracing directly in just the second generation to the legendary 27 Ibn Galal 5, imported from Babolna Stud in Hungary, through her dam, the equally iconic Simeon Safanad, while being further immortalised as a direct daughter of the late great Asfour, Australia’s leading Straight Egyptian sire originally imported from Dr. Nagel in Germany.

Simeon Saada with Marion Richmond

Simeon Saada has proven herself an exceptional producer over her breeding lifetime, with progeny and descendants exported all around the world, and with many more remaining as essential members of the Simeon breeding programme.  Her legacy continues to thrive at Simeon Stud through her son Simeon Samech (by Anaza Bay Shah), as well as through daughters Simeon Sepharad (by Asfour) and Simeon Saadia (by Imperial Madaar), and granddaughters Simeon Shafiyah (by Simeon Shifran), Simeon Shade (by Mulayh Ibn Maareesa), and Simeon Suzette, Simeon Susula and Simeon Sayit (all by Simeon Samech).  I look forward to the continuing contribution the descendants of Simeon Saada will inevitably play in the future success of the Simeon Stud.

To both WAHO and the AHSA, I extend a deep debt of gratitude for honouring Saada and the Simeon programme with this prestigious award. To have her still in our presence is the greatest gift – Saada will turn thirty years old in August 2020, and remains as radiant and as inspiring as ever.”

* Sadly, Saada has since passed away.  This is her obituary notice:  “On a crisp morning of September 1990 a beautiful filly was born. She was the result of a combination of genetics from two of Simeon Studs most treasured horses, the legendary ‘Asfour’ and farm matriarch ‘Simeon Safanad’. Simeon Saada was a full sibling to Simeon Stav, Simeon Salome, Simeon Sadik (exp GB), Simeon Shaina, Simeon Safir (exp EG), Simeon Shakaf and Simeon Silla (exp SA), most of which have gained Australian and World Championships and created dynasties of their own. Saada, with her big black eyes and classical Arabian beauty, was no exception to this. Although unshown, she went on to follow in her mother’s hoof prints and become one of Simeon Stud’s most treasured mares. She had 12 foals over her lifetime, the first four were exported, while the others became successful producers in Australia. Saada was an accomplished broodmare for Simeon Stud with her progeny having an impact all over the world. She was also the 2020 WAHO trophy recipient. Saada’s dynasty here at Simeon Stud will continue for many years to come through her daughter Simeon Saadia (by Imperial Madaar), granddaughter Simeon Shafiyah (Simeon Shifran x Simeon Sepharad) and son Simeon Samech (by Anaza Bay Shah), with 3 of his exceptional young daughters retained by Simeon Stud.  We will forever miss her kindness and beauty gracing the pastures here at the farm.  Rest In Peace Simeon Saada. “.

Salsa, 2020 WAHO Trophy Winner in Poland
photo: W. Pawlowski

Salsa comes from Janów Podlaski’s famous S-line of fantastic racing mares. This damline, stemming from Sabda and her best daughter Sabellina, has produced several generations of stakes winning mares, such as Sasanka, Saszetka, Sarenka, Sajra, Sanna, Samarra and Santa, to name but a few. Interestingly, one of the most well-known mares in this family is Sarmacja, dam of Salsa and a previous WAHO Trophy award winner herself in 2007. Salsa is maternal sibling to several great racers such as: Sarmata (Sasanka and Wielki Szlem Stakes winner), Subaru (Gepard and Kabaret Stakes winner), Sabat (Sambor, Ofir and Kurozwęki Stakes winner) and Savvannah – the best Polish race mare of the new millennium, with 13 wins, including 11 stakes wins.

Salsa herself raced over two seasons, during which she won three races, including the Oaks and Sabellina Stakes. She continues the grand tradition of her accomplished damline by having produced as many as seven race winners, including Sabah (Koheilan I and Sambor Stakes winner), Sabir (Derby, Arabian Produce [Janów Podlaski] and Czort Stakes winner) and Sabatina who is herself the dam of Severus (Derby and Ofir Stakes winner).

FAKIR IBN BUKEFAL, Grey stallion, 2014 (Bukefal / Fatima S)
Breeder: Lucija Gubanek, Owner: Peter Pozar
Strain: Kehailan Al-Shaykhan (60 Adjuze, 1876)

Slovenia is pleased to announce the winner of their 2020 WAHO Trophy.
When in 2014 Fatima S delivered a long legged colt by the ‘Straight Russian’ stallion Bukefal (Almonito/Moriachka), nobody dared to predict that the colt will one day be the fastest Arabian in Slovenia.

His dam Fatima S is by the pure Crabbet WAHO Trophy winner Golden Crown (Naxif/Luanda) and out 9 Farag II, the beautiful and elegant queen of Babolna.

The talented Fakir Ibn Bukefal won his first race (1400m) on 27.7.2019 in Imeno, Slovenia with several lengths advantage. In Zagreb, Croatia, on 19.10.2019 he dominated the international race (1800m).

Fakir’s owner will continue racing the talented stallion in 2020 in the international races. Fakir Ibn Bukefal is also a breeding stallion, that will surely contribute to the Slovenian breeding in the future.

ELS – 2020 WAHO Trophy Winner – United Kingdom

ELS, Grey Stallion, 1994 (Eldon / El-Era)
Breeder: Mrs. Wendy J. Carr, Owner: Mrs. Julie Warmington
Strain: Shuweyman Sabbah (Cherifa, 1869)

The Arab Horse Society has awarded their 2020 WAHO Trophy to the 26-year old stallion, Els, in recognition of his outstanding contribution as an excellent all-round ambassador of the breed.

Friends for over 20 years, with his owner Julie Warmington

With his pure Polish pedigree, Els has shown extraordinary and enthusiastic versatility throughout his life. Acquired by his owner, Julie Warmington as a 3 year old, his kind and generous temperament meant that he has happily taken part in all the activities she asked of him. He has not only attempted, but excelled at, everything Julie has done with him, from cross-country eventing and show jumping to in hand showing, dressage, polocrosse, mounted games, acting as a schoolmaster to young riders, as well as pleasure rides. Julie even taught him to retrieve objects! With his busy competitive life and very limited opportunity at stud due to lack of facilities for visiting mares, his part-bred daughter, bred by Julie out of her warmblood mare, has also shown ability at eventing and showjumping.
The following pictures illustrate Els’ versatility:

Enjoying a beach ride

Bringing a smile to very young child

Schoolmaster for young rider

Winning his class at UKIAHS in 2013

Having fun with Mounted Games

Enjoying Cross-country jumping

Over the years he has won his fair share of gold medals and rosettes in ECAHO affiliated halter classes, as well as many red rosettes from other activities he has taken part in. His most notable success was in 2013 at the UK International Arabian Horse Show, where he won the class for stallions aged 17 and over, scoring 4 x 20 and 1 x 19.5 for his extravagant movement. He has also been shown in the All Nations Cup in Aachen.

Els is an absolute treasure of a horse, he has a big personality and is much loved by his owner and all who know him. Still fit and well, these days he enjoys a quieter life, hacking out and going on riding holidays, especially if there is a beach ride to delight in. He is kind enough to look after children wanting to enjoy supervised rides on him. Throughout his life he has introduced so many people to the amazing versatility and abilities of the Arabian, and is a true ambassador for the breed.

Unfortunately, the 2020 AHS National Show was cancelled due to the Covid-19 situation, so his well-deserved and planned public award ceremony and presentation was not possible.

MULAWA KARA MIA MI – 2019 WAHO Trophy Winner – Australia

MULAWA KARA MIA MI, Chestnut mare, 1995 (GLF Apollo x Karmaa)
Breeder and Owner: Mulawa Arabian Stud Pty Ltd.
Strain: Kehaileh Rodanieh (Rodania, 1869)

The Arabian Horse Society of Australia has announced that the winner of their 2019 WAHO Trophy is the outstanding aristocrat broodmare, Mulawa Kara Mia MI. The Trophy was presented by WAHO President Peter Pond at a public ceremony during the Australian Arabian Ambassadors Presentation as part of the 2019 WAHO Australia Conference celebrations, during the East Coast Championships Show at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre. ‘Kara’ was paraded with a selection of her outstanding descendants, to public acclaim.

Citation provided by owners:
At 23 years of age, Mulawa Kara Mia Mi is the senior member of the universally renowned Karmaa family of international champions in residence at Alabama Stud, Australia. An icon in her own right as the source the most prolific branch of her esteemed dam family, ‘Kara’ is beloved the world over as the maternal source of Arabian excellence for elite breeding horses, show horses & equine athletes.
Born in the third Mulawa-bred foal crop of her venerated US-imported sire GLF Apollo (Diamond Padron x Per Brio by Percussion), Mulawa Kara Mia MI did much to advance his prolificacy as a sire of superior quality progeny with a distinct modern appeal. The lucky number three also played a role in Kara’s destiny as the third foal – and third successive daughter – of her immortal dam Karmaa, an East Coast & National Stud Show Champion Mare who founded the most important and influential dam family at Mulawa, whose resounding impact still reverberates worldwide. A daughter of World Champion Stallion Kaborr (Naborr x Bint Kholameh by Adibiyez) & United States National Reserve Champion Mare AN Marieta (AN Malik x AN Fayrosa by Fadjeyn), Karmaa was bred by WAHO Founding Member Jay Stream and his wife Dorothy, while her dam was on lease to Tom Chauncey Arabians. This combination of genetics in Mulawa Kara Mia MI’s pedigree, a blend of Spanish, Egyptian, Russian, Polish, Crabbet & foundation American breeding, with a generous dose of globally influential show & breeding horses, has made her an invaluable broodmatron whose impact continues to exponentially evolve and expand across four continents.
A successful show horse herself as a young mare, Kara has left an indelible mark on the breed as a broodmatron both at home and abroad in her most important role for Mulawa. With a lifetime production record of a modest eleven foals, Kara has achieved Aristocrat Dam status with seven champion produce, a near perfect record considering both Mulawa Dancing Flame & Kartier MI were both lost prematurely prior to being shown. All four of her surviving daughters have become invaluable broodmatrons with multiple champion produce of their own. Of these daughters, three – Mulawa Kiara, Krystal MI and, most importantly, Karess, have produced sons who have matured into sires of significance, the result of which has disseminated the Mulawa Kara Mia MI influence around the world. Karess is, most incredibly, the dam of five sons (and counting) who have been used as chief sires both in Australia and abroad, including Australian National Champions Kavalle MI in North America & Konfidence MI in Thailand, the former of which has an impressive siring record of 50%+ champion progeny worldwide, while the latter has emerged as an important sire of endurance athletes in Southeast Asia.

The exceptional Mulawa Kara Mia MI granddaughter Klassical Devotion MI (Klass x Mulawa Kiara) is now owned by HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohamed Al Thani in the UAE. A twice Australian National Champion, she has achieved success for her family on the international stage in the Arabian Gulf, the most competitive arena for the Arabian horse in the world, while producing the next generation of champions for her happy new owner. Closer to home, the twelve year old matron Karess made her show ring debut this past November at the National Stud Show, winning the Senior Champion Mare title in spectacular style alongside her daughter, Kavalia MI (by Gazal Al Shaqab), as Champion Arabian Presented by a Youth & Reserve Champion Arabian Handled by a Non-Pro, and in turn her son, Ne Khe Sahn (by Advise MI), as Champion Yearling Colt & Champion Junior Colt Handled by a Non-Pro. This inspiring success for three-generations of the same dam family in one single afternoon was enhanced by the success of two other Karess sons earlier in the season at the NSW State Titles as Katar MI (by Abha Qatar) was named Champion Senior Stallion, & Kharacter MI (by Advise MI) was named Champion Junior Colt.
Descendants of Mulawa Kara Mia MI are now thriving and impacting the breed on four continents, contributing significantly to the advancement of breeding & athletic achievement in important emerging communities such as China & Thailand, amongst the leading centers of activity in Europe & North America, as well as in the heart of the Arabian homeland in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates & the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. With nearly ten important male descendants siring the next generation of excellence around the world, dozens of multi-generational descendants succeeding at the elite level of equine sport on the global stage and her best producing daughters, granddaughters & great-granddaughters in the primes of their lives, the influence of Mulawa Kara Mia MI is destined to exponentially expand, both positively and profoundly, over the next several decades. Wherever her influence is felt around the world, the excellence of the Australian Arabian horse is celebrated and esteemed.
Now retired from broodmare duties, Mulawa Kara Mia MI still upholds her daily responsibility of raising the next generation of excellence at Mulawa as a full-time ‘nanny’ for the yearling fillies maturing at Alabama Stud in the Upper Hunter Valley in the heart of Australia’s Horse Capital outside of Scone. Healthy & vibrant, and still as endearingly charming as the day she blessed the world with her presence, Mulawa Kara Mia MI is an undeniable testament to the enduring excellence of the Arabian mare and to the inherent attributes for which the Australia-bred Arabian horse continues to be respected around the world.

Valeta passes on her willingness to work. Her children cannot be fooled, which can sometimes be a disadvantage during shows. Despite that, they have a huge list of winnings to their name. Because of this, Valeta has been registered by her owner for the Elite predicate.

MAKAHIWI PHOENIX – 2019 WAHO Trophy Winner – New Zealand

MAKAHIWI PHOENIX, Chestnut Mare, 2003 (Lochaber Turk / Bluebird)
Breeder & Owner: C. Struan Duncan
Strain: Dahmeh Um Amr of Ibn Hemsi (Dahma, 1876)

The New Zealand Arabian Horse Society is pleased to announce the winner of their 2019 WAHO Trophy is the outstanding endurance mare, Makahiwi Phoenix. Her sire Ngapa Joussif was himself a previous winner of the WAHO Trophy, at the grand age of 29 back in 2006, and he also sired the 2009 winner, Cyden Sun, who was 27 years old at the time of the award. WAHO sincerely hopes these genes for longevity will also have been inherited by the lovely mare, Makahiwi Phoenix and we wish her a happy retirement from endurance competition in the future, and many fine foals.

Makahiwi Phoenix enjoying one of her many endurance competitions.

Citation by her Breeder & Owner, C. Struan Duncan:
“It was a midwinter day 2003, I was showing some friends around the farm, looking at some horses. I pointed out a mob of mares wintering in the hills, and noticed a grey mare standing halfway down a very steep ridge. There was a small brown bundle laying at her feet, and I thought, that’s strange, must be an early calf, but why is that mare standing over it. I thought I better take a look, so rode the bike up around the top, and walked down the ridge towards the mare. At her feet was a newborn filly foal, a chestnut with white socks. I picked her up, and with the mare following, carried her down the ridge and into a safe paddock. The mare was Bluebird, a 23 year old by Ngapa Joussif, out of Ngapa Velvet, who had only ever had one foal before, and we weren’t expecting another. The foal, Makahiwi Phoenix, by our lead stallion at the time Lochaber Turk (AU).

She turned out to be a stunning filly, and was duly backed and ridden out by Katrina Duncan. Her first novice endurance rides were based on the farm, and her career had begun.

Maureen and Les Davie then moved to town, and Maureen was looking for a horse to ride so I gave her Phoenix to have a ride on, knowing that she would never be sold out from under her. Here a partnership was born. From 2013 Maureen brought her through the distances nice and steadily. A weighted saddle was made by Leon Liversage especially so that Maureen made weight. By her second full season in 2014, she as starting to win a few rides and Maureen expressed a desire to have a go at a 160km ride. So a goal was set for the 2015 New Zealand Nationals at Taupo. Maureen stuck to the plan, taking her through the qualifying rides 1*, and then 2*, culminating in a successful 3* 160km ride at the New Zealand Nationals also winning the coveted Peter McLellan Memorial Trophy for the quickest lag times – 12 minutes in total for the entire day. 2015 would also see Phoenix and Maureen take out the National Distance Horse and Rider of the Year.

2016 was another full season, but with the New Zealand Nationals in the South Island, Phoenix was prepared for the Man V Horse event instead. She duly took the title, setting a course record which still stands.

2017 and the season’s goal was once again the New Zealand Nationals. This time with an Australian junior, Tahlia Franke, taking the ride. Maureen and Les spent the season preparing her, and Tahlia doing a pre-ride to learn about Phoenix. The result – Tahlia and Makahiwi Phoenix took out the New Zealand National 3* 160km event, and also the National Junior Distance Horse of the Year. In the meantime Maureen had also ridden Phoenix to a Gold medal at the 2017 Masters Games.

For 2018 the season was being set for Maureen and Les’ grandson, Jayden Loveridge, to ride Phoenix at the North Island Championships. Jayden had a very successful season on her, with some good wins, culminating in the North Island Junior 160km title. Maureen once again took Phoenix to the Man V Horse event at the end of the season, coming a close fought second.

Makahiwi Phoenix is a beautiful free moving mare, always looking to work. We have been blessed to have this late surprise adorn our stud. For this season she is again in training, but will be put to the stallion later in the season. We are excited to see what sort of foal she and Inshallah Colorado (AU) can produce.

This year Makahiwi Phoenix achieved her 3000km qualified rides (ESNZ only), thus making both the NZAHS Performance Roll of Merit, and the ESNZ Endurance Roll of Merit. Added to this she has done over 1000 km’s of qualified rides under WATRC, RADRS, DRNZ, and Man Versus Horse.”

PETLA – 2019 WAHO Trophy Winner – Poland

PĘTLA, bay mare, 1994 (Visbaden / Petra)
Breeder and Owner: SK Janów Podlaski
Strain: Not recorded, family of Szamrajówka (ca. 1810)

Poland has announced that their 2019 WAHO Trophy was awarded to the remarkable broodmare PĘTLA. She is 25 years old, and now retired from breeding, but she looks very well for her age. It was a great pleasure to be able to honour her during the 2019 Polish National Show in front of a large audience.

Pętla comes from the Pentoda branch of Janów Podlaski’s famous P-line established by Piewica, from which stem numerous show champions and superb athletes as well as past WAHO Trophy winners such as Pianissima, Pinga and Palmeta.

L-R: Mr. Grzegorz Czochański, Acting President of Janów Podlaski Stud; Pętla; Mr. Kamil Biernat, trainer from Janów Podlaski Stud; Ms. Anna Stefaniuk, Breeding Manager Janów Podlaski Stud; Mr. Tomasz Chalimoniuk, President of the Polish Jockey Club.

Pętla is the dam of 14 foals, which have excelled in various disciplines including shows, racing, show-jumping and other sports. A race winner herself, as many as 10 of Pętla’s produce won at least one race at the track: Pentagram (1999 stallion by Druid), Pedagog (2001 stallion by Pilot), Poligon (2000 stallion by Wachlarz), Pensar (2004 gelding by Pesal), Prado (2005 stallion by Ekstern), Persymona (2007 mare by Ekstern), Perla (2008 mare by Ganges), Pendragon (2012 stallion by Om El Bellissimo), Parsek (2014 stallion by Kahil Al Shaqab) and Penang (2015 stallion by Polon).

Pętla’s most famous offspring is of course the stallion Pogrom (by QR Marc) 2009, who took the titles of Polish National Junior & Senior Champion Stallion. During his stay in America, he was the US Triple Crown Champion Stallion (Champion Stallion at the major shows in Scottsdale, Las Vegas & the US Nationals). Another decorated son is Prado (2005 by Ekstern) who took the titles of Junior Spring Show Champion Stallion & Best in Show at Białka.

As many as five of her sons have been and are still used as chief sires in both Arabian horse breeding and in half-breds for the improvement of sport breeds. These include Pogrom, Prado, and Pedagog in Arabian horse breeding and Pentagram & Poligon in both Arabian and sport horse breeding.

Her daughters have also been excellent broodmares. Her best daughter is undoubtedly the broodmare mare Pepina (2002, by Pilot ) who is herself the maternal grandam of the full brothers Perkun, (Junior Spring Show Yearling Top Five Stallion) and Peon (Prague InterCup & European Cup Junior Champion Stallion), both by Kahil Al Shaqab out of Penta by Ecaho).

With all her many successful descendants down through several generations, Pętla is certainly a very worthy winner of Poland’s 2019 WAHO Trophy.

Citation by the owner, Annina Rohner-Cotti:

“Born in the Swiss mountain wilderness, close to the Swiss National Park on May 2001, my husband and I noticed this splendid black filly with the small, heart-shaped white sign on her forehead in summer 2003. We were not looking for a sports or show horse, just simply for a black mare with good conformation that would be nice to look at together with our beautiful white gelding Hanaya Ibn Imdal. Rubina (Shaolin/Vesuvia) was bred by Reto Hellrigl, Aua Naira Arabians.

At the age of 3 years, Rubina moved in with us and we started to train her according to the methods of natural horsemanship by Pat Parelli. Rubina was very people oriented and it was always a lot of fun to play with her “at liberty”, without a halter or a rope and soon she won several competitions in “Horse Agility”. Rubina is extremely sensitive, extroverted and has a really active character. As soon as she had a rider on her back and was allowed to run a bit faster or to jump over an obstacle, it was difficult to handle her temperament. So we (our daughter Lea Rohner and I, Annina Rohner-Cotti) had to be very careful not to overstrain this mare with her extremely strong will to perform. In 2005 we started with short endurance competitions and realised that Rubina was really good at this!

Over several years we slowly increased the distance of the endurance-competitions, so called EVG, from 30 to 90 kilometres and only after she filled her 10 years, I dared to participate in my and Rubinas first endurance-race, the “national endurance contest” CEN* in Fehraltorf. We won this race with an average speed of 18.01 km/h. In 2012, at the age of 11 years, Lea participated successfully in her and Rubina’s first international endurance competition CEI* in Germany. In the following years Lea and Rubina successfully finished several CEI** races (CEI** means races from 120 to 139 km whereas CEI* are from 80 to 119 km).

Rubina took part five times in the Swiss Endurance Championships and went home with a medal every time: 2011, 2012 and 2013. Rubina won the bronze medal in the category youth with Lea Rohner, and in 2015 she won the silver medal in the category elite with Annina Rohner. In 2016 Rubina won the silver medal in the category elite again, this time with Lea, who by that time had to compete in the adult category.

Rubina X in a Horse Agility class showing her great relationship with Lea Rohner.

In her whole career as an endurance sports horse Rubina successfully achieved 2,500 kilometres in endurance competitions and only once she did drop out of a competition. The maximal average speed she reached in a race was at 18.81 km/h. Besides her medals she also won a “best condition” prize in a CEN* race in 2012.

Rubina also participated in several show jumping competitions and fulfilled the admission requirements for eventing competitions. Rubina had to stop with competitive racing due to an injury in 2017. We remain thankful for all the extraordinary and sometimes emotional experiences we went through together.”

PRINCE CHARMING FF – 2018 WAHO Trophy Winner – Australia

PRINCE CHARMING FF, Grey gelding, 2007 (Brumarbas Future / Bremervale Charmed)
Breeders & Owners: Doyle & Kate Dertell, Future Farms
Strain: Managhi Sebeyli (Beni-Kaled, 1918).

The Arabian Horse Society of Australia has awarded their 2018 WAHO Trophy to Prince CharmingFF – the horse that can do it all!
Prince Charming FF is a 11 year old Purebred Arabian gelding sired by BruMarBas Future (Imp USA) and out of the beautiful Bremervale Charmed – making him a maternal brother to superstars Crave FF and Sir Charmed FF. Bred and owned by Future Farms, Prince has taken on all before him in every discipline he has attempted.

Prince was sold into a partnership between Terri Love of Temar Arabians and Future Farms as a weanling colt, and this partnership showed Prince initially in halter as a colt, then under saddle and halter as a stallion. During this time, Prince won championships at State, National, National Capital, East Coast and Australian National Championships in both led and ridden as an entire. His first filly was also shown not long before he was gelded and was named Gold Champion at the Australasian Breeders Cup.
By the age of 6 Prince had won just about every championship as an entire shown horse on offer, and with our son Kody Dertell riding him at home since Prince was 4, it was decided that Prince would be gelded and come out and do it all again as a gelding. Not long after he was gelded, we sold Terri Love’s half share in Prince Charming to Helen and Andy Hardwick of Al Sahrae Arabians, and Prince not only came out as a show gelding, he also had a new purpose and that was to teach Brittney and Evan Hardwick to ride. Brittney also was showing Prince in hand at the shows alongside Kody – he was proving to be the best youth and amateur horse teaching them both the ropes!
In late 2016, Al Sahrae sold their half share to Future Farms and to this day the Dertell family still own Prince Charming FF outright. Since this time, Prince has successfully competed in flat racing (winning multiple starts), is an open book endurance horse, has won in halter, saddle, dressage, open Galloway hack classes, western, show hunter, Bridle path hack, working stock horse, freestyle, sporting, working hunters, leading rein and various fancy dress events. He also has carried the flag and done the official opening at multiple shows as well as at home at our open days and functions. Prince also has been the Arabian representative at multiple Equitana festivals where he loves to be petted all day and eat ice creams with kids that come to visit!
To have a can do temperament and attitude to life is one thing, though to have incredible type and style as he does, Prince Charming FF really is the horse that can do it all! He is the true ambassador for Arabian Horses in Australia.

CONCHITA D.A. – 2018 WAHO Trophy Winner – Belgium

CONCHITA D.A., Grey Mare, 2015 (AF Albahar / Schiva D.A.)
Breeder: Johan Verstrepen, Dijkhoeve Arabians, Owner: Peter Deckers
Strain: Hamdanieh Simrieh (Selma)

Citation by Nelly Philippot-Hermanne, President AHRCB (Arabian Horse Racing Club of Belgium)

The WAHO Trophy is a proof of appreciation the World Arabian Horse Organization gives yearly to each Stud-book Authority Member of WAHO to hand out to a pure-bred Arabian horse born in the country, still belonging to an owner of the country, that was considered that year as the best ambassador of the breed by its results or as a prospect. As the Arab horse has three main qualities; beauty (valued in the show-ring), speed (proven by flat racing) and endurance (wherein he dominates all other breeds), there are many nominees coming from the different breeding directions. This explains why 2018 is only the second time that the Executive of the Belgian Registry (BAPS-SBCA) has awarded the WAHO Trophy to a horse (prospect in this case) in our sport of racing. To encourage this activity, Belgium’s WAHO Trophy 2018 was awarded to a young mare named Conchita DA.

CONCHITA D.A.

Born at Dijkhoeve Arabians of Johan Verstrepen at Itegem, her dam Schiva D.A was also Belgian bred at the same stud and also was performing well for Johan, her breeder-owner-trainer in the races at that time: Schiva D.A. raced some twelve races at age 3 and 4. When 3-years old (in 2005) Schiva D.A. secured a fourth place in Newbury (GB) and in Duindigt (NL), she won two races and placed in the money several times. At age 4, she was second in Belgium and was then retired to stud to become a broodmare for Johan. The sire AF Albahar was born in the United Arab Emirates in 2004 and never raced himself, but he already has many good offspring, among them several Group PA-horses. The future will prove that the effort of importing semen of superior racing-stallions to introduce new bloodlines in the Dijkhoeve Stud, was worth it.

Conchita D.A. changed hands as a young mare and moved to the stables of Peter Deckers, a friend of Johan. She was progressively prepared and trained there by Anne Engels, the “morning-rider” at Peter’s training center. The filly matured quickly and showed her will to race. She was first entered in a race in the Netherlands (Duindigt) on 8th of July, when she was merely 3 years old in a race over 1.800m. The strong field was very international with horses from the Netherlands, France and Sweden. Despite being a beginner, Conchita D.A. managed in this very tough race a good 5th place. All the more worthy, as the distance was a little too long for Conchita D.A. and the track rather hard which caused her slight sore shins.

After a long resting period, Conchita D.A. was again entered on October the 10th, this time in Ghlin, where she ended the race in second position. Again she was the only 3-years old to compete against older horses. Most of the starters were of very good bloodlines and had far more racing experience. On top, Anna Van den Troost, her regular jockey, had to be replaced by another jockey, who had to carry 1 kg overweight. The start was not so lucky, but fortunately the French jockey was a good one and he managed to make the best out of it and rode Conchita D.A. to a brilliant second place! Her next race was again in Duindigt where she raced nearly the whole distance in the lead and managed to cross the finish in second position again.

As Conchita D.A. did very well and was in top-condition during the autumn, Peter and Anne decided to race her once more, this time with horses of her own age and over a distance that fitted her better. The team of Anne and Anna went to Toulouse for a 1.400 m-race for fillies only, in the heart of Arab racing country. There were quite a few very strong contenders that had already proven that they were of Group PA-level. Conchita D.A. raced brilliantly and finished second! Beating French horses in France … just do it!!

At Peter Deckers training stable, the other top-race-horse is JAMAS D.A., also bred at Dijkhoeve Arabians and she is also a grey daughter of AF Albahar. Jamas D.A. has yet a longer career with several wins and interesting places in Group PA and Listed-races. In between, by the way, she is now labelled “Black type” thanks to her very exciting second place in a group II-race in Duindigt (The Netherlands) in September 2018. Both mares are very look-alike and the breeder as well as another trainer and even the “usual” jockey of Jamas D.A. mix them up now and then!

Let’s hope that CONCHITA D.A. ’s further evolution will be as good as Jamas D.A., or, who knows, even better in view of what she showed till now! Anyway, already now CONCHITA D.A. and her whole team are very good ambassadors for the Belgian breeding of Arabian race-horses in Belgium and abroad!!

The Finnish Arabian Horse Society has awarded their 2018 WAHO Trophy to the 7-year old mare Samarah. D-PRODIGY – 2018 WAHO Trophy Winner – Netherlands

D-PRODIGY, Grey Gelding, 2001 (Primo / Dolce Vita)
Breeder: Amber Bruijs-Leylayan of La Dolce Vita Arabians
Owner at time of award: Theo and Erica Heldens
Strain: Family of Murana I, 1808.

In the picture, holding the WAHO trophy are Theo and Erica Heldens, owners at time of the presentation and of course Prodigy-D himself, ridden by his current owner Georgette Zeijen.

The Dutch Arab Horse Society (AVS) is pleased to announce that their WAHO Trophy for 2018 has been awarded to the outstanding endurance horse, D-Prodigy. Also known as ‘Prody’, he was born in 2001 in the stables of Amber Bruijs-Leylayan of La Dolce Vita Arabians. His sire is the Swedish-bred stallion Primo [Engano/Polka) of all Polish bloodlines, his dam is the Gil daughter Dolce Vita, several generations Dutch-bred on the female line who carries Polish, Straight Egyptian and old Marbach bloodlines.
As a 3 year old, Prody was sold to the Heldens family from Meijel, Limburg, the Netherlands. After a short but successful dressage period ridden by daughter Erica Heldens, Prody started in the sport of endurance in 2005 with father Theo van Helden. Some highlights of their joint endurance achievements were the 100 milers in Most, Czech Republic and Florac, France, the World Championship for 8 year olds in Compiegne and the 2 day competition at the Alpe d’Huez.
In 2014, Prody faced physical problems which brought international competitions to a halt. Prody was however successfully treated and expectations lifted.
Georgette Zeijen then became Prody’s new rider and with Theo as coach, she rode her first endurance race in 2015 on a fully recovered Prody. In 2016, Georgette became Hippiade champion in Endurance class III and in 2017 she rode her first CEI* race in Ermelo, the Netherlands. In May 2018 all the hard work pinnacled where this combination became Champion at the Dutch CEI*** National Endurance Championship.
Theo and Erica Heldens still cheer Georgette and Prody on at all their races, although Georgette has recently become the proud new owner of Prody.
D-Prodigy is now 17 years old but it seems he is still in his prime. He has accumulated more than 2,700 race-miles and is therefore an excellent ambassador for the Arabian breed.
The Dutch WAHO trophy 2018 was awarded during the National Championship show 2018 in Ermelo, the Netherlands by AVS president Mrs. Sandra Boogaard (not pictured).

WILLOWVALE SAARFARI – 2018 WAHO Trophy Winner – New Zealand

WILLOWVALE SAARFARI, Grey Stallion, 1995 (Eastwinds Axiom (AU) / Dellmount Ardys)
Breeder: Noel Evans. Owner: Jenny Klemra
Strain: Dahman Um Amer of Ibn Hemsi (Dahma, 1876)

The New Zealand Arabian Horse Breeders Society has awarded their 2018 WAHO Trophy to the 20-year old grey stallion, Willowvale Saarfari. It is worth mentioning that he is by the same sire as New Zealand’s 2006 WAHO Trophy winner, Willowvale Picasso, and that his daughter Zaha Magic, whose dam is New Zealand’s 2007 WAHO Trophy winner Bushland Gai Sharee, has twice been National Champion Ridden Mare. The Trophy Presentation will be made at the NZAHBS AGM in May 2018.

The following Citation is provided by his Owner, Jenny Klemra:
With the purchase of Willowvale Saarfari, our ‘perfect stallion’ had arrived. In 1996 he won the New Zealand National Supreme Champion Purebred title at the age of 14 months. Little did I realise that at that time he would soon be grazing in our paddock and become an important part of Golden Shelter Arabians. Willowvale Saarfari was purpose bred by the late Noel and Gaynor Evans of Willowvale Arabians being of the ‘golden cross’ – with his Spanish, Crabbet and Egyptian bloodlines. Saarfari’s bloodlines on both sides of his pedigree need no introduction, they are world renowned in both type and performance – with El Shaklan on his sire’s side and Ralvon Pilgrim on his dam’s side he was always destined to be a star.

Saarfari has excelled in both ridden and halter classes, his show record is overflowing with major awards. Winning nine New Zealand National titles, he is Roll of Merit at Halter and Elite Roll of Merit in Performance. I cannot put into words what Saarfari has brought to Golden Shelter Arabians – with his wonderful progeny and the people we have met through him which has brought us to where we are today. He is more than we could have wished for and to us he epitomizes what the Arabian is all about. He has taken us on the most amazing journey.
