This is the 4th year in which WAHO has acted as the umbrella patron for this prestigious and well managed event, which comprises two World Championship rides, one for 7 year olds over 130 km and one for 8 year olds over 160 km. Present to watch this year s two rides were the WAHO President Hans-J. Nagel, Vice-President Peter Pond, Treasurer David Angold, and Executive Committee Members Valerie Bunting, Bob Fauls, Xavier Guibert, Claudia Quentin, Marek Trela, and Consultant Howard Pike.

Xavier Guibert, WAHO Executive Committee member, explains how WAHO s association with this event came about: From the beginning, the main goals of WAHO were the promotion of the specific abilities of our breed, which are for example beauty, intelligence and endurance, and also animal welfare. In this area, regarding animal welfare, about 10 or 12 years ago the International Equestrian Federation (F.E.I.) started to manage specific Championships for Young Horses in the various Olympic disciplines. So there is a showjumping championship for young horses in Lanaken in Belgium; one for dressage in Verdun in Germany; and for eventing at Le Vieux Logis in France. These competitions are completely specific for young horses, in order to preserve their health and their career.

Some years ago Compiègne, in the North of France, hosted the open European Endurance Championships following the cancellation of this competition which had been due to take place in England that year. Most of the countries taking part discovered that Compiègne was a very nice place for endurance, because there is a nice forest and the type of ground is very good for endurance. So we had the idea to organise a World Young Horse Endurance Championship at this place, and we were looking for an umbrella organization to support this. The Young Horse Championships in showjumping, eventing and dressage all have their own umbrella organization, which is the WBSFH World Federation for Sports Horses and this Federation was not interested in Arabian horses. So we proposed to both ECAHO and WAHO that they could be the umbrella organization for this endurance event. And Hans Nagel on behalf of WAHO accepted our invitation to attend this Championship, together with some Executive Committee members, and WAHO agreed to become the umbrella. And we discovered that this would be a very good place and good intention to promote our breed.

The reason why it was proposed that WAHO should be the umbrella for this F.E.I. Championship is because endurance is the only discipline where our breed can compete and can win against all the other breeds. In other disciplines such as showjumping and eventing and dressage, the other breeds have been selectively bred for these sports and they normally win against any Arabians taking part, but in endurance at every competition all over the world, every year the Arabians are in the top 10 and normally they win. So that s why we think that this is a good opportunity for WAHO as this is the best discipline for the promotion of our breed.

In 2009, experienced competitors came from many countries for this event, including riders from Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Sweden, Slovakia and Spain. The majority of horses taking part were Arabians, Anglo-Arabs and Part-bred Arabians, with some Shagyas, Selle Français and other breeds as well. It is interesting to note that many of the entries were specifically bred for endurance.

Competitors in the World Young Horse Endurance Championships enjoy the good going in Compiegne Forest

Each year, the WAHO Compiègne Trophy is awarded to the highest placed purebred Arabian. This year, the winner came from the 130km ride for 7-year olds in which 58 horses were entered, 24 from overseas and 34 from France, of which 37 finished. The first 5 home were all purebred Arabians.

First place, title of World Champion 7 year old and the WAHO Trophy went to the bay mare Orette De Tanues (Kesberoy / Daisy Du Cayrou), owned by Al Shaqab Stud of Qatar, with a time of 6:30:10. In 15th place at the first vet gate, she worked her way through the field to be in 2nd place at both the second and third vet gates, finally taking the title by a clear 5 minutes. Orette De Tanues was bred in France by Eugene and Jean-Charles Maisonneuve and ridden by Faleh Nasser Saleh Abugnaim. Her pedigree is mainly French and Polish with additional Marbach and old Egyptian lines. The large and very professional Qatar team of riders, trainers, grooms and crew were obviously delighted with their win.

<img src="Images\2009-Endurance\OrettedeTanuesFrance.jpg" alt="Dr. Hans-J. Her pedigree is of Polish, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese and Crabbet lines, it is also interesting to note that her dam Fahdschi is the second dam of Nefertiti Larzac, second in the 8-year old 160 km Championship.

Just 7 seconds later the fourth horse home crossed the finish line. This was Allan Leon for France riding the chestnut gelding Harmattan Othelo (Psytadel / Hamy De Gargassan) bred by Harmattan Arabians and owned by Regis Huet. It is encouraging to note that his pedigree, combining the lines of famous horses such as Padrons Psyche, Bey Shah, Vatican, Warandes Plakat and El Shaklan, indicates that horses bred for the showring can also perform extremely well at the highest level in endurance. Indeed, as a youngster Harmattan Othelo competed and claimed championships at the highest level in international ECAHO shows, and his dam has other very successful show horses to her name. His owners took the chance to collect and freeze his semen before he was gelded, feeling that he had a better chance to reach the top in endurance as a gelding, but wanting to keep the possibility to have his foals in the future.

<img src="Images\2009-Endurance\AngloArabMagicoEndurance.jpg" alt="Dr. Hans-J. They finished in a time of 8:27:30 at an average speed of just under 19 kph, having been in the first three throughout the ride. The winner s sire Kaspar D Arques is a purebred Arabian, being by the famous Tersk-bred sire of endurance horses Persik (Kankan / Pamiatka), out of the mare Rouseyna (Rouse Nefous / Naseyna) who is of Egyptian, English and American lines. The winner s dam Caccia is an Anglo-Arab De Complément of Thoroughbred and old French Anglo-Arab lines.

Second just 4 seconds behind the winner was Sandrine Lance also from France, riding the grey Arabian mare Nefertiti Larzac (Said Lotois / Mahoud Fahdchoumi), the highest placed purebred in the top 10. She had worked her way slowly up through the field, never lower than 11th place. This lovely mare s pedigree is of Polish, French, Marbach and Spanish lines, she was bred by Christelle Derosch and is owned by Guillaume Vanderkerckhove and has already completed two other 160km rides in France this year.

Third was the Brazilian rider Andre Vidiz riding the Anglo-Arab gelding Magico Endurance (Saad Ibn Syed / GR Mata Hari) in a time of 08:33:46. Bred by Haras Endurance in Brazil, his French-bred Arabian sire, himself a successful endurance horse, is of Spanish, Marbach and Romanian/old Hungarian lines and the Arabian part of his Brazilian-bred dam s pedigree also has lines to well known endurance-producing horses.

Fourth in a time of 08:42:19 came the Spanish rider Alex Luque Moral riding his own grey O Bajan XX-3, a Shagya stallion.

<img src="Images\2009-Endurance\PartArabianNasdakdeSommant.jpg" alt="Dr. Hans-J.
